Saugus Girls Volleyball Team Sweeps Valencia In Foothill League Opener

khts_sportsThe Saugus girls volleyball  team opened the Foothill League season with a stunning three-game sweep of Valencia.

Saugus snapped a 17-match losing streak against Valencia and beat the Vikings for the first time since 2002. Valencia has won at least a share of the Foothill League championship every year since 2001.

Jaclyn Clark led Saugus with 14 kills. Teammate Ashley Pagan added nine kills and eight blocks. Setter Ashley Guthrie had 34 assists.

Delaney Knudsen had a team-high seven kills and nine digs for Valencia.

The West Ranch girls volleyball team swept Canyon in three games. A trio of Wildcats, Angel Rutledge, Sage Hernandez and Alexis Clewis, recorded 10 kills apiece to lead West Ranch.

The Hart girls volleyball team beat Golden Valley in four games. Amy King led the Indians with 11 kills.

The Trinity Classical Academy girls volleyball team swept Concordia in three games. Julia Howell had seven kills to lead Trinity.

In high school golf, the West Ranch girls won the second Foothill League match of the season by one stroke at Vista Valencia.

West Ranch shot 212 as a team, followed by Valencia at 213. Hart, the four-time reigning Foothill League champion, was third at 222. Hart’s Jamie Corr shot the low round of the day at 2-over par 35.

West Ranch’s Julie Ward finished in a tie for second place with a 4-over par 37.

In high school tennis, the Saugus girls blanked Canyon, 18-0. Megan Soucy, the No. 1 singles player for Saugus, swept her sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

The West Ranch girls beat Golden Valley, 12-6, behind strong play from the doubles teams. Sydney Schwartz and Sarah Andrews swept their sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

In college soccer, the College of the Canyons women shut out Baksersfield, 3-0. Saugus High graduate Sarah Sager scored two goals for COC. Valencia High grad Kassandra Talamantez scored the first goal of the game.

In preseason hockey, the Kings lost to the Penguins, 3-2, in a shootout that lasted eight rounds. Jarrett Stoll and Alec Martinez each had a goal and an assist for the Kings.
