UPDATED: Suspect Eludes Deputies In Canyon Country Morning Chase

khts_crimeUPDATED 4:36 p.m. Tuesday: The suspect who eluded deputies after being pursued earlier today was found on Shangri-La Drive and questioned. Sgt. Gregg Lewison told KHTS that the young man, a juvenile, was a probationer that was on house arrest; he was taken into custody and transported to Sylmar Juvenile Detention Center.

A containment area was set up this morning in Canyon Country in an attempt to find a young man deputies suspected of having a gun, but the search came up empty.

According to Lt. Joseph Efflandt of the Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s station, around 7 a.m., deputies patrolling Soledad Canyon Road spotted a man who appeared to have something he was tucking in his waistband that deputies thought might be a gun. The man ran away from the deputies, who went in foot pursuit, but they lost him in the area of the strip mall near Mandan Street.

A containment was set up on Soledad Canyon Road bordered by Luther Drive/Homyr Place, Mandan Street and Vilna Avenue, but the suspect eluded capture.

Efflandt said that air units aided in the search, but could not find the suspect, who was described only as a male, 18, wearing a grey long-sleeved shirt. He added that the item seen by the deputies could have been stolen property or drugs and said that no firearm was actually seen.

The containment was broken down at 7:40 a.m.
