Supervisors Consider Castaic Pool Complex

Castaic residents could start the summer of 2013 with a public swimming pool complex on a par with the city of Santa Clarita’s Aquatics Center if the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approves a $9.6 million design-build contract Tuesday.

Supervisors are scheduled to consider awarding the contract to Perera Construction & Design Inc. for the first phase of the project, to be built on 3.5 acres adjacent to the existing Castaic Regional Sports Complex. It would be situated along Castaic Road between the Days Inn Motel on the north and the county Parks and Recreation Department’s North Agency Headquarters on the south.

Phase 1 would take about 20 months to complete. It would include three pools – a 25-meter recreational pool for competitive swim training, a 21-foot by 75-foot shallow pool, and a “splash pad” play area for children – along with a 12,500-square-foot pool building and recreation office, granite walkways, and a parking lot for 65 cars.

Also, a pad would be graded for an Olympic-size pool to come in a future Phase 2.

Operated by county Parks and Rec staff, the complex would be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Hours would be expanded for special events and private parties when Phase 2 is complete – but not before, a county staff report said.

The report said attendance estimates for planning purposes were based on historical use of the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center, which it said is “similar in size and structures.”

Phase 1 average attendance is pegged at 288 per day in the summer and 146 per day in the off-season. The largest Phase 1 pool could hold up to 308 people.

The future Olympic pool would accommodate up to 615 people and would boost daily Phase 2 attendance to 758 in the summer and 206 in the off-season.

The total Phase 1 project cost is $13 million. It is being funded with $10.35 million from the Fifth District’s unincorporated area enhancement account and $2.65 million in developer fees.

Perera was one of 19 companies to bid on the project. Its $9.582 million price tag includes a $191,000 allowance for design changes.
