Deputies With Infrared Rescue Towsley Canyon Night Hikers

air_29Santa Clarita Station Sheriff’s Deputies rescued two lost female hikers last night from Towsley Canyon around 10 p.m.

According to Lt. Joe Efflandt, after family members of the two Pacoima women reported them overdue, a helicopter was dispatched to the location off The Old Road in Newhall.

Sheriff’s helicopter Air 29, equipped with Forward Looking Infrared technology (FLIR), located the women about a mile from their car. Using their spotlight deputies were able to lead the women back to their vehicle.

On the ground, deputies hiked in part of the way and intercepted them. Deputies determined the women were unharmed and needed no medical attention.

Officials say the FLIR can "See in the dark" and senses anything from body heat to the heat of car engines.

The Air 29 spotlight is a 30 million candlepower "Night Sun".
