Sergio Gonzalez Wins Second Race Of COC Cross Country Series

khts_sportsSergio Gonzalez won the second race in the College of the Canyons cross country series, running the course in 15 minutes, 15 seconds. He was followed by Ricky Avila in second in 15 minutes, 17.2 seconds.

On the women’s side, Rosa Del Toro won in 17 minutes, 39.6 seconds. She was followed by Karen Rosas in 18 minutes, 18.1 seconds.

The next race in the 38th annual COC cross country series is July 21.

Brian Hernandez, who played for the College of the Canyons baseball team in 2008, signed his first professional contract with the Los Angeles Angels. Hernandez was picked in the 27th round of the Major League baseball draft.

The third baseman continued his college career at UC Irvine before being drafted by the Angels.

Hernandez returned to the COC campus to visit with his old coach, Chris Cota, before heading to the Angels minor league system.

The Major League Baseball season resumed with a handful of games after the All-Star break.

The Giants scored five runs in the top of the 12th inning and beat the Padres, 6-2. Pablo Sandoval capped the rally with a two-run, bases-loaded single in the 12th.

In other games, the Brewers clobbered the Rockies, 12-3, and the Marlins doubled up on the Cubs, 6-3.

In the American League, the Rangers shut out the Mariners, 5-0, the Indians beat the Orioles, 8-4, the Blue Jays outslugged the Yankees, 16-7, and the Twins beat the Royals, 8-4.
