Incumbents Announce Intent To Run For Newhall School Board

nsd-logoIncumbent Newhall School Board members, Mike Shapiro, Sue Solomon, and Brian Walters have jointly announced their run for reelection to the Newhall School Board in the upcoming November 9, 2011 elections.

When asked about their decision to return to the school board, Shapiro, Solomon, and Walters cited the need to continue the success of the Newhall School District during the current fiscal crisis and into the future with experienced and proven leadership.

Solomon, president of the Newhall School Board, stated, “The Newhall School District is the highest achieving school district in the valley demonstrated by our state test scores and we have been able to remain so during these most challenging economic times.”

Shapiro commented, “We have taken a conservative approach to our budget.  We cut $6 million dollars over the last five years during this financial crisis and still retained our teachers and our music and visual arts programs”.

“There is still a lot to do to weather this fiscal storm, so that the Newhall School District continues to deliver the quality instruction it does today, and that takes experience, knowledge, and successful leadership,” added  Walters.

“The success of our student learning is based on collaboration between educators, staff, parents, community members, and having a school board that truly understands the culture and the needs of its community. That is only accomplished by having school board members such as Sue Solomon, Brian Walters, and I, who invest time visiting our schools, cultivating relationships and talking to parents, teachers, staff, community members, and local businesses,” added Shapiro.

“Another important reason we are running for re-election is that the District is considering a bond measure that would extend our current Measure K facilities bond. A recent study completed by the District indicated that over 70% of the voters would support the extension of the bond.  I believe this is a direct result of how we managed Measure K and the community realizing the importance and impact of modern-up-to-date schools on student learning and property values. Measure K funds along with state-matching funds allowed us to complete all projects and build McGrath School.  Should the bond be placed on the ballot and the voters decide in favor of extending Measure K, then the voters deserve to have those who managed Measure K, and we, Mr. Shapiro, Mr. Walters, and I, want to be there to see the projects and the bond through completion,” explained Solomon.

Shapiro is completing his second term on the Newhall School Board. Solomon is completing her third term; and Walters is completing a two-year appointed position that occurred as a result of Michael McGrath resigning the election in 2009.

“Public education faces many challenges today.  Providing our children the skills and the knowledge they need to succeed as adults in the 21st century is essential. A quality pre-school and elementary education lays a strong foundation for future success. That is why our team approach will continue to be valuable to the community,” said Walters.
