Saugus, Canyon Runners Shine At CIF State Track And Field Meet

khts_sportsSaugus runner Stephanie Bulder finished sixth in the 1,600, clocking a personal best time in the CIF State Track and Field championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis, and followed up with a 13th-place finish in the 3,200.

Saugus senior Kaylin Mahoney led a trio of runners from Saugus in the 3,200. She was 12th. Teammate Karis Frankian was 20th.

The Canyon boys 4-by-100 relay team was sixth at the CIF State finals after setting the Foothill League record in 41.78 seconds in the preliminaries on Friday.

Valencia’s Faith Anumba posted a pair of top-10 performances. She was seventh in the long jump and ninth in the triple jump.

The Santa Clarita Blue Heat women’s soccer team won a pair of games over the weekend, including an upset win over the Vancouver White Caps, the United Soccer League W-League runners-up from a year ago.

After five games, the Blue Heat is undefeated with a 4-0-1 record.

The Blue Heat beat the White Caps, 5-2, on Sunday at The Master’s College. Edite Fernandes scored two goals. Her second goal gave the Blue Heat a 3-1 lead in the second half.

The Blue Heat started the weekend with a 3-0 shutout againts the Seattle Sounders at Valencia High School. Fernandes had a goal and an assist to lead the Blue Heat.

The next game for the Blue Heat is on Thursday in Colorado against the Rush.

In the NBA Finals, the Miami Heat bounced back and beat the Dallas Mavericks, 88-86, in Game 3.

Dwyane Wade scored 29 points and had 11 rebounds, but it was Chris Bosh’s jumper with 39 seconds left in the game that proved to be the difference.

The Heat has a 2-1 lead in the series. Game 4 is Tuesday in Dallas.

The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead and beat the Cincinnati Reds, 9-6. Starter Chad Billingsley went only five innings and earned the win, but it was his performance at the plate that made the difference. He hit a home run and drove in a career-high three runs.

In other games, the Giants beat the Rockies, 2-1, the Nationals scored five runs in the top of the 11th and beat the Diamondbacks, 9-4, and the Padres beat the Astros, 7-2.

The Mets survived the Braves, 6-4, the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 3-2 in 10 innings, the Brewers beat the Marlins 6-5 in 11 innings, and the Phillies finally beat the Pirates, 7-3.

In the American League, the Angels lost to the dreaded Yankees, 5-3, the Rangers shut out the Indians, 2-0, the Red Sox beat the A’s 6-3, and the Mariners beat the Rays, 9-6.

The Blue Jays beat the Orioles, 7-4, the Tigers beat the White Sox, 7-3, and the Twins shut out the Royals, 6-0.
