Youth Summer Food Program

California_School_Nutrition_AssocThe Santa Clarita Valley Food Services Agency knows that hunger doesn’t take a summer vacation.

That’s why they’re inviting all children between the ages of 1 year and 18 years of age to participate in a free lunch program.

Jane Crawford, Director of the Santa Clarita Valley Food Services Agency says there are no income restrictions.

“It’s for anyone under the age of 18 years old to come and enjoy lunch or breakfast. Whichever they would like to do,” Crawford said.

These meals are made available under the federal child nutrition program called the United States Department of Agriculture Summer Meal Program.

This USDA program provides meals, free of charge, to all children whether or not they are part of a free breakfast or lunch program in their school.

Crawford says the nation’s poor economy has changed the number of families taking part in the summer program.

“It’s actually increased, of course, because of the economy. There are quite a few more families who need assistance. So we have tried to provide that for as many locations as we can,” Crawford said.

Other than age, the only restriction is that meals must be consumed on the facility premises.

Disabled persons 19 years and older who participate during regular school periods in a public or private non-profit school program for the mentally or physically disabled are also eligible to participate in this program.

SCVSFSA is a non-profit public school entity created by the member school districts of Newhall, Saugus, Sulpher Springs and Castaic to provide school breakfast and lunch to students in Santa Clarita.
