Valencia Softball Team Eliminated From CIF Playoffs

khts_sportsTheValencia softball team lost to El Modena, 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Missy Fundora hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to cap a three-run rally and put Valencia up 4-3. But El Modena scored two runs in the seventh inning to pull out the win and knock Valencia out of the playoffs.

Karlie Habitz was 3-for-4 with an RBI single in the first inning. Bethany Kemp went 2-for-4 for Valencia.

The Master’s College men’s golf team is tied for 11th place after three rounds of the NAIA championships at the TPC at Deere Run in Illinois.

The Master’s College shot 896 as a team in the first three rounds of the tournament that has been postponed and hampered by bad weather in the Midwest.

Oklahoma Christian is the leader after three rounds with a team score of 857.

John Lawson has the top score for The Master’s College with a 10-over par 223 and is tied for 29th place. He is 16 shots off the lead.

In auto racing, Duarte Ferreira, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport, will start 14th in today’s Firestone Freedom 100 Indy Lights race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Qualifying was cancelled because of rain and the starting grid was set by owners points.

Dan Wheldon, driving for Bryan Herta Autosport in the Izod IndyCar Series, will start sixth and on the second row in Sunday’s Indianapolis 500.

Bryan Herta Autosport is owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta, a Hart High grad.

In the NBA playoffs, the Miami Heat rode a fourth-quarter comeback to eliminate the Chicago Bulls, 83-80, in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.

The Heat won the series, 4-1, and will face the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals. The first game is Tuesday night in Miami.
