Food Pantry Celebrates Success Of Letter Carrier Drive
By Belinda Crawford, Executive Director, SCV Food Pantry
Last Saturday, May 14th, our local letter carriers pulled double duty. They delivered the mail to us as usual…but they also carried away bag after bag of donated food items from the residents on their routes. Those donations to the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry will help fill hungry tummies right here in Santa Clarita.
Did you know that nationwide one in six people or one in four children battle hunger each day – they skip meals, or eat non-nutritional foods just to satisfy their hunger? I’m sure that the thought of hungry children right here in our very own valley is just not acceptable to residents of the SCV. Approximately 45% of our clients are children and 11% are senior citizens (many who must make the choice each month to purchase their medications or the food they need) both of these vulnerable age groups are innocent victims of their circumstances.

A big thank you to the National Association of Letter Carriers of Santa Clarita for your time and efforts in collecting over 31 tons (62,000 lbs.) of food during the 19th Annual NALC “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive. This donation will help sustain us through the summer months when need for our services is at it’s highest level all year since children are out of school and can not take part in the free breakfast or lunch programs they provided. Summer months are also historically the time of the year that donations are at their lowest.
Thank you to the SCValley Mommies, Wells Fargo, SC Blue Heat, Hallway Plumbing, Lundgren Management, Disney and the many volunteers who worked tirelessly Saturday loading and unloading the bags of donated food. Thanks to our many volunteers for your commitment and efforts throughout the year as you help sort, shelf, bag and distribute the donations to your neighbors in need.
As the Santa Clarita Valley Food Pantry celebrates its 25th Anniversary of neighbors helping neighbors because “No child in the Santa Clarita Valley should go to bed hungry,” we would like to thank you, Santa Clarita, for your continued generosity and support of those less fortunate in our community.
