CIF Baseball, Softball Playoffs Begin Today

khts_sportsThe West Ranch baseball team opens the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs at home against El Modena in the wild-card round today, weather permitting.

JC Cloney is expected to start for West Ranch against El Modena, the fourth-place team from the Century League.

The winner moves on to play Lakewood in the first round of the playoffs on Friday.

Hart is home for its first-round game and will play Los Alamitos.

Valencia, the champion of the Foothill League, awaits the winner of the Millikan vs. Moorpark wild-card game.

Edison of Huntington Beach is the top-seeded team in the Division I bracket. Mater Dei of Santa Ana is the No. 2 seed.

The Trinity Classical Academy baseball team is on the road in the wild-card round of the Division 7 playoffs. The Knights open against Coast Union in Cambria today.

In the CIF Southern Section softball playoffs, Hart opens on the road against Upland in the Division 1 wild-card round today. Hart finished in fourth place in the Foothill League standings and earned an at-large bid into the playoffs.

Saugus, the Foothill League champs, will be home for the first round of the playoffs on Thursday. The Centurions will play the winner of the Fountain Valley vs. Canyon of Anaheim game.

West Ranch opens against Moorpark at home on Thursday. Valencia travels to Edison in the first round.

The Trinity softball team is making its CIF playoffs debut in Division 7. The Knights will play Coastal Christian of Arroyo Grande, the Coast Valley League champions, on Thursday in the first round.

Three golfers from Valencia High School made the cut at the CIF Southern Section Northern Individual Regional at Las Posas Country Club in Camarillo.

Daniel Kim, Glen Lee and Jonathan Chang advanced to the Southern Section Individual Final at Industry Hills Country Club.

West Ranch’s JJ Holen, the Foothill League MVP, missed the cut. He was 7-over par at 78, one shot off the cut-off point to advance to the individual final.

Kim shot a 3-over par 74, the best of the three who advanced. Lee was 5-over par at 76. Chang shot 6-over par, 77.

Jonathan Sanders from New Community Jewish shot the low round at Los Posas with a 1-under par 70.

In college golf, Alex Macaluso and Aaron West from College of the Canyons tied for third at the California Community College Athletic Association State Championship at Kings Country Club in Hanford.

Both players shot 145 in the two-round tournament. They were each 2-over par at 74 in the first round and then shot 1-under par 71 in the second round.

Andrew Perez from the College of the Desert won the state championship with a 138 over two rounds.

In the Amgen Tour of California, Ben Swift of Britain won the weather-delayed and rain-shortened opening stage from Nevada City to Sacramento.

Peter Sagan of Slovakia was second, followed by Matthew Goss of Australia in third.

The second stage of the Tour of California starts in Auburn and ends in Modesto today.

In the NBA playoffs, the Dallas Mavericks and the Oklahoma City Thunder begin the Western Conference finals tonight in Dallas.

In the NHL playoffs, the Tampa Bay Lightning will look to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals tonight against the Boston Bruins. The Lightning won Game 1, 5-2.
