Valencia Baseball Team Powers Past Canyon
The Valencia baseball team beat Canyon, 8-5, behind a pair of two-run home runs from Trey Williams and AJ Balta. Shane Zeile also homered for Valencia. Alex Bishop had three hits and Quincy Quintero drove in two runs.
Cole Mears was 3-for-4 and scored two runs for Canyon.
Valencia won at least a share of the Foothill League championship. The Vikings have an 11-3 record and lead Hart by one game. The Foothill League season ends on Friday.
Hart beat Golden Valley, 7-3, scoring five runs in the second inning. Garrett Gooding drove in three runs in the inning with a bases-loaded double to give Hart a 5-0 lead.
Dallas Bacon hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for Hart.
The West Ranch baseball team beat Saugus, 5-3, behind a solid outing from starter JC Cloney. He pitched into the fifth inning and struck out eight. Matt Blake had three hits for West Ranch.
In high school swimming, West Ranch’s Riley Mita qualified in two events at the CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries in Long Beach.
He was one of six swimmers from Foothill League schools who qualified for the Southern Section finals.
Mita’s time in the 200 freestyle was the best in the preliminary meet. He also qualified in the 500 freestyle. Mita won the Foothill League championships in both events.
The Valencia boys tennis team rolled past Atascadero in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.
Valencia, the fourth-seeded team in the playoffs, won 15-3, as the three Vikings doubles teams went 9-0 in the match. The No. 1 doubles team of Anders Jansson and Joey Fernicola won their sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1.
The West Ranch boys tennis team beat La Quinta, 12-6, in the first round of the Division II playoffs. The West Ranch doubles team of Brandon Lee and Ryan Yoon swept their sets impressively, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1.
The Saugus boys tennis team lost to Camarillo, 11-7, in the first round of the Division II playoffs. The Saugus top doubles team of Spencer Parks and Kevin Okimoto swept their sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
The Saugus and West Ranch boys golf teams are in the CIF Southern Section team championships at Mission Lakes Country Club in Desert Hot Springs. Saugus won the Northern Division championship on Tuesday. West Ranch finished second.
The CIF boys volleyball playoffs resume tonight with Valencia and Hart in action.
Valencia, the third-seeded team in the Southern Section Division II playoffs, is home against Righetti.
Hart is on the road to play a well-rested and top-seeded Corono del Mar.

In the NHL playoffs, the Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks will play a decisive Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals tonight. The Sharks had a 3-0 lead in the series, but the Red Wings won the next three games to tie the series.
The game is in San Jose. The winner gets the Vancouver Canucks. The puck drops at 6.
In the NBA playoffs, the Miami Heat eliminated the Boston Celtics with a 97-87 win in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Heat won the series, 4-1.
The Oklahoma City Thunder soundly beat the Memphis Grizzlies, 99-72, in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Thunder leads the series, 3-2. Game 6 is Friday in Memphis.
