Castaic Shelter Closed Sunday For Big Volunteer Cleaning Project

littledogIf you’re in the mood to adopt a new four-legged family member on Sunday, you’ll have a longer drive, as the Castaic shelter will be closed – for a good reason.

Hundreds of two-legged humans equipped with paint brushes, gardening tools, brooms and hammers will be taking over the Castaic Shelter during Big Sunday, one of the largest community service events in the country.

The volunteers will be completing a variety of facility enhancement projects, from new landscaping around the kennels, a general top-to-bottom cleaning, kennel enhancements, minor repairs, mural paintings and other projects.

A second County shelter is also getting some tender loving care, the shelter in Downey will also get a major sprucing up during the day-long campaign.

Volunteers and donors are still welcome to sign up for the project. More than 100 people have already signed up to work at both the Castaic and Downey locations, which made County officials decided that closing the facility to the public might be the safest thing for both animals and volunteers.

kittypicBoth shelters will reopen for business at noon Monday, May 16.

The Department of Animal Care and Control encourages potential adopters who would normally visit the Castaic shelter to visit the Lancaster shelter, located at 5210 W. Avenue I, Lancaster or the Agoura shelter, located at 29525 Agoura Road, Agoura.   Potential adopters who normally visit the Downey shelter can visit the Carson shelter, located at 216 W. Victoria St. in Gardena.

When the dust settles after Big Sunday, the animals in the care of the DACC will enjoy a more comfortable, temporary home as a result of the planned projects.  Projects are also aimed at creating a more inviting atmosphere for the public to encourage additional shelter visits.  DACC hopes to see an increase in animal adoptions subsequent to the completion of these projects.
