Saugus Softball Team Stays On Top Of Foothill League Standings
The Saugus softball team is the team to beat in the Foothill League, but no team has done it in a while.
Saugus scored four runs in the fourth inning en route to an 8-1 win over Canyon. The Centurions lead the Foothill League standings by a game over West Ranch and Valencia with two games left to play.
Jenna Kelly hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Erika Escedy led off the inning with a solo shot to centerfield.
Valencia won its third league game in a row to stay in the championship hunt. The Vikings beat Hart, 6-2, behind a complete game from starter Sydney Mundell.
Andrea Brackpool was 2-for-3 with a home run for Valencia. Maddy Jelenicki drove in two runs and was 1-for-3.
The West Ranch softball team shut out Golden Valley, 10-0, and is tied for second place in the league standings with Valencia.
Janelle Lindvall was 2-for-4, hit a two-run home run and drove in three runs for West Ranch. Kylie Sorenson was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and drove in a run.
The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team beat Hillcrest Christian, 4-3, at The Master’s College. Starter Ryan Fullarton tossed a complete game with eight strikeouts.
The Trinity Classical Academy baseball team beat Newbury Park Adventist, 12-6, scoring seven runs in the fourth inning. Jordan Mumper was 2-for-5 and drove in three runs.
Canyon’s Jason Ferlianto won the Foothill League singles title in boys tennis with a 6-2, 6-4 win over West Ranch freshman Harrison Collins at the Paseo Club in Valencia.
It was the second time Ferlianto won the Foothill League singles championship in boys tennis.
The reigning league single champion, Valencia’s JR Macalutas, teamed with Anders Jansson to take the doubles title in straight sets. They beat Valencia teammates John Schmidt and Joey Fernicola, 6-1, 6-2, in the championship match.
Maculatas and Jansson completed an undefeated season in league play. Macalutas was 22-0 in singles matches in addition to winning all his doubles matches. Jansson went 30-0, all in doubles matches.
The Hart boys and girls swim teams won the Foothill League championships at the finals at the Santa Clarita Aquatics Center.
Hart’s Bob Hwang had a record-breaking day. He won his eighth league title, matching the mark set by former Hart swimmer and Olympic gold medalist Anthony Ervin.
Hwang also set two league records at the meet. He won the 200-yard individual medley with a record time of 53.71 seconds. He won the 100 butterfly in a record-setting 49.49 seconds.
The Valencia boys volleyball team won its 11th straight Foothill League championship and completed an undefeated league season with a three-game sweep over Saugus.
The Hart boys volleyball team took second place in the Foothill League standings after a grueling, five-game win over Golden Valley.
The Canyon boys volleyball team ended the league season on a winning note with a three-game sweep over West Ranch. It was the first win in league play for Canyon.
In the NHL playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks beat the Nashville Predators, 3-2, in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Canucks are up three games to one.
The Lakers will look to win the first game of their playoff series against the Dallas Mavericks tonight. But it won’t be easy.
The Lakers are down 0-2, losing the first two games at Staples Center. They will also be a man short. Ron Artest was suspended for a game after committing a flagrant foul against JJ Barea at the end of the Game 2.
Game 3 is set to tip off at 6:30.
