Sun Tanning The Smart Way
With the weather getting warmer every week, those summer impulses are starting to kick in. We are finding ourselves shopping for that perfect summer bathing suit and taking every possible chance to go out and lay under the bright Santa Clarita sun.
Of course, we are all well aware of the harmful effects that UV rays can have on our skin. Rays can cause deterioration of the skin, which in turn, can cause sagging, wrinkles, and at worst, skin cancer.
There are two types of sun rays: UVA and UVB. While UVB are the reason behind those unsightly sun burns, UVA can cause skin cancer if exposed for long periods of time. So it is important to take care while you lay out on that lawn chair with nothing more on your skin than a thin layer of sun tan lotion. You might also consider some safer options to take the next time you want a sun kissed glow.
The first option is to try out a tanning salon. Tanning beds only have a slight exposure to UV rays and can help you get a glowing beach perfect, allover tan. The downside to this type of tanning can be that it can sometimes be costly and create an unnatural hue on your skn.If tanning beds have you slightly freaked out, there is always the option for spray tanning. The formula used for spray tanning usually contains moisturizers or vitamins that protect and keep your skin soft.

Another option is the do-it-yourself method. There are tons of great self-tanning products out on the market today that make your sun tanned glow look as natural as the real thing. They have made a huge improvement from the initial "unnaturally orange" look. There are products out there that allow you to use gels, wipes, lotions, or even a pill to get a tan with out even have to step foot in the sun.
And if you just prefer the natural way, there are some steps you should take before you lay out. If you're going to be in the sun, limit your exposure by only laying out a half hour to an hour at a time. This not only reduces your chances for sunburn and also gives your body the time to produce more melanin, which gives your skin color. Most importantly, apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you start tanning. Remember, the fairer your skin, the more SPF your sunscreen should have.
Of course this method will give you the most natural look (if you don't burn) but the safest way to tan is to try out a salon or self tanner. This way your not abusing your skin under those damaging sun rays and you are getting a glowing, as good as natural tan.
