Valencia's Jonathan Chang Takes Lead In First Round Of The Newhall Cup Golf Tournament
Valencia’s Jonathan Chang shot a 2-over par 74 to lead the first day of the Newhall Cup golf tournament on a blustery day at the TPC at Valencia.
The two-day tournament, which also doubles as the finals of the Foothill League, continues today. West Ranch won the first round with a team score of 407. JJ Holen shot the low round of the day for West Ranch with a 4-over par 76.
The Saugus boys golf team was second with a team score of 413. Valencia was third at 430.
Zack Leonard of Saugus shot a 6-over par 78 and no player from Saugus shot over 86.
The Hart boys volleyball team swept Canyon in three games and won its third league match in a row. Tanner Tengberg led Hart with nine kills.
The Valencia volleyball team beat Golden Valley in three games and won its 99th straight Foothill League match. Valencia is 7-0 in league play this season.
Kurt Fults led the Vikings with eight kills. Griffin Ender had 11 digs and Shane Nazarian had 23 assists for Valencia.
The West Ranch boys volleyball team beat Saugus in five games. Dylan Grant led West Ranch with 14 kills and Tanner Skabelund had nine.
The Saugus softball team crushed Golden Valley, 15-1 in five innings, and took over sole possession of first place in the Foothill League standings. Saugus starter Cassie Herrera gave up only two hits and struck out six.
Ashley Butera and Alyssa Rodriguez each went 3-for-4 for Saugus.
The West Ranch softball team, which entered the day tied for first with Saugus in the Foothill League standings, lost to Hart, 4-1.
Hart scored all four runs in the third inning. Tracy Chandless drove in two runs in the inning with a single. Juli Strange and Blake Lewis added RBI singles in the third.
West Ranch’s Janelle Lindvall hit a solo home run, her 11th of the season.
It was one of only five hits Hart starter Emili Escamilla surrendered in the game. She went the distance, struck out two and walked one.
The Canyon softball team shut out Valencia, 1-0 in extra innings, in what might have been the biggest surprise of the day. Canyon starter Leanne Hill scattered eight hits and struck out one.
Hayley Bottino knocked in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. Her double scored pinch runner Kaelie Doyle.
Valencia lost its third league game of the season. It is the first time since 2000 that Valencia, the 10-time Foothill League champions, have lost three league games in a season.
In high school tennis, the Valencia boys beat Golden Valley, 16-2. The West Ranch boys beat Saugus, 16-2.
The Lakers won Game 5 of the opening round of the NBA playoffs, 106-90, over the New Orleans Hornets. Andrew Bynum scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds. He was one of six Lakers to score in double figures.
Kobe Bryant, playing with a sprained ankle, scored a team-high 19 points and played 29 minutes.
The Lakers have a three-two lead in the series. Game 6 is in New Orleans on Thursday night. Tipoff is scheduled for 5.
In the NHL playoffs, the Vancouver Canucks, the top-seeded team in the Western Conference, beat the Chicago Blackhawks, the reigning Stanley Cup champions, 2-1 in overtime, to move on to the second round.
The Montreal Canadiens beat the Boston Bruins, 2-1, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Game 7 is tonight in Boston.
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Buffalo Sabres, 5-2, in Game 7 of their opening round playoff series.
