Valencia Boys Volleyball Team Keeps Winning Streak Alive
The Valencia boys volleyball team made quick work of Canyon, sweeping in three games to stay undefeated in Foothill League play.
Broc Oppler had 12 kills and 10 digs for Valencia. Eric Ensing added eight kills and three blocks.
Griffin Ender had 18 digs, Austin Csiszar had five blocks and Shane Nazarian recorded 21 assists.
Valencia won its 98th straight Foothill League match, a state record. The Vikings are closing in on 100 wins in a row. Their next two league matches are against Golden Valley on Tuesday and West Ranch on Thursday.
The Hart boys volleyball team swept West Ranch. JJ Mosolf and Taylor Gregory each notched seven kills for Hart. Gregory also had five blocks.
Chet Nordskog led West Ranch with six kills.
The Golden Valley boys volleyball team beat Saugus in five games. Ryan Kessler had 16 kills for Golden Valley. Dalton Frost and eight blocks and Ryan Holcombe had 12 digs.
College of the Canyons guard Kelli Lewis will continue her college basketball career at the University of the Pacific in Stockton next season.
Lewis, a Hart High graduate, averaged 14.7 points and 4.7 assists per game as a sophomore at COC. She will join Ashley Wakefield, another player from COC, at Pacific. Lewis is the third player from COC to transfer to Pacific. Arielle White was a senior at Pacific last season.
The Valencia softball team rallied from a six-run deficit to beat Saugus, 12-7, and even its Foothill League record at 2-2.
Karlie Habitz hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Maddy Jelenicki was 4-for-4, scored two runs and drove in a run for Valencia.
Christin Clark was 3-for-4 and Kate Karppinen was 2-for-4 with an RBI for Saugus.
Hart starter Emili Escamilla no-hit Golden Valley in her team’s 12-0 win. The game was called after five innings. Julie Strange was 4-for-4 and drove in four runs for Hart.
Blake Lewis and Paxton Provost each drove in three runs for Hart.
The West Ranch softball team beat Canyon, 5-4. Julia Lombardi was 3-for-3, drove in two runs and scored a run for West Ranch.
Janelle Lindvall was 2-for-2 and scored two runs.
The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team beat Desert High, 14-4, in five innings. Davis Muxlow went the distance on the mound, striking out six. He was also 3-for-4 with an RBI double and scored three runs.
The Saugus girls track and field team beat Valencia, 88-48, in a Foothill League meet at Valencia High School. The Saugus boys also won, 77-59, over Valencia.
The Canyon boys track and field team beat West Ranch, 111-25. The Canyon girls narrowly beat West Ranch, 71-65.
The Golden Valley boys track and field beat Hart, 71 ½-64 ½. The Golden Valley girls beat Hart, 84-52.
The Lakers are in New Orleans for Game 3 of the first round of the NBA playoffs. The series is tied at one game apiece.
The Lakers are coming off a low-scoring, 87-78, win over the Hornets in Game 2 of the playoffs. Kobe Bryant scored only 11 points and Pau Gasol scored only eight.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 tonight.
The Kings are down three games to one after a crushing 6-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks at Staples Center in the first round of the NHL playoffs.
The Sharks scored three goals in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Ryane Clowe scored twice for the Sharks.
Brad Richardson, Justin Williams and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored for the Kings.
Game 5 of the first-round playoff series is Saturday in San Jose. The puck drops at 7:30.
