When It Comes To Oral Health, There Are Advantages To Non-Metal Fillings

nealgreen2Cavities are bad news. And when it comes time to have that cavity filled or have an old filling replaced, the question always arises as to whether or not you want metal or non-metal fillings.

There are generally two types of fillings to choose from: composite resin (non-metal) or silver amalgam (metal). The choice is yours to make but it is important to know that there are more advantages to non-metal fillings than there are to metal ones.

Composite resin is aesthetically pleasing. Unlike metal fillings, the composite resin blends in with your natural tooth color and is almost unnoticable. Metal fillings contrast your tooth color and the shiny deposits draw attention to almost every covered cavity in your mouth.

White tooth fillings are not susceptible to hot and cold. Hot and cold tempuratures cause metal fillings to expand and contract causing the eventual breakdown of the filling. Tooth fillings that have pulled away from the tooth enamal can create a way for bacteria to crawl in between which can cause tooth decay.

On the other hand, composite fillings bond to the tooth and can actually restore the tooth's original strength.

Another downside to metal fillings is that they are considered a health risk. The Food and Drug Administration  issued a statement declaring that metal dental fillings, which are about half mercury, may lead to serious health problems. Composite fillings are considered healthier than having metal in your mouth over long periods of time.

Though the cost of composite fillings may be a bit more then metal or amalgam fillings, the decision to choose non-metal fillings are an oral health decision that you can feel good about.

When it comes time to replace that old metal filling or fill an existing cavity, visit the local Dr. Neal Green DDS. Dr. Neal will let you know if composite fillings are a smart choice for your dental health.
