Renewal Of Drivers Licenses For Service Families Made Easier By Senator Runner

RunnerSharon1To make living out of state or overseas easier for the spouses of active duty service members, Senator Sharon Runner introduced legislation to automatically renew driver’s licenses to cover the length of time they are absent from the state when they move with the service member.

“Military personnel and their spouses make great sacrifices in serving our country, especially those living out of state or overseas,” Sen. Sharon Runner said. “They along with their families deserve the support of their fellow countrymen.”

“My proposal would make living away from California a little less stressful.”

Specifically, Senate Bill 720 would allow the driver’s license of the spouse of an active duty member of the United States Armed Forces to continue in full force and effect when they are not residing in the state.

Senate Bill 720 continues the longstanding tradition of extending the benefits offered to members of the Armed Services to their spouses, in order to make life easier and less worisome when they are out of state or overseas. Military spouses often move with the service member, which can make life unsettled and busy.

“Taking the task of renewing a driver’s license off the to-do list is a small step the state can take to make military life easier for both the service member and their spouse,” Runner concluded.

The bill passed Senate Transportation and Housing Committee and now awaits a hearing in the Senate Appropriations Committee.
