Two Canyon Girls Earn Spots On All-CIF Basketball Team

khts_sportsThree girls from the Santa Clarita Valley earned spots on the All-CIF Southern Section basketball teams.

Canyon’s Adrianna Dent and Alia McCoy were selected to the Division 2AA team. Santa Clarita Christian’s Taylor Cubas was selected to the Division 6A team.

Two boys from the Santa Clarita Valley earned spots on All-CIF teams.

Valencia’s Lonnie Jackson was selected on the Division 1A team. Santa Clarita Christians’s James Brooks was selected to the Division 6A team.

The Valencia softball team lost for the first time this season in the Faster to First Classic tournament in Anaheim over the weekend.

Valencia lost to Riverside Poly, 3-1, but came back and beat Sandburg, the No. 4 ranked team in the nation, 9-1.

Justine Sibthorp and Maddie Jelenicki each drove in three runs and had two hits in the game against Sandburg.

Valencia only managed three hits against Riverside Poly. Karlie Habitz drove in Valencia’s only run with a double.

Valencia continues play in the Faster to First tournament against El Dorado today.

The Hart girls finished third in the Southern Section Relays swim meet in Long Beach over the weekend. The 4-by-50 butterfly relay team, led by Sam Asencio and Hayley Good, set the school record in 1:46.07.

Edison won the Southern Section Relays, followed by University High from Irvine in second.

The College of the Canyons men’s golf team won a Western State Conference match by 17 strokes at San Dimas Country Club and improved to 30-0.

COC set a school record with a 10-under par 350. Aaron West shot 5-under par 67 to lead COC. James Holley and Max Cohen each shot 2-under par 70. Alex Macaluso was 1-under par, 71, to put four players from COC in the red.

The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team lost to  Pacifica Christian, 7-2, in the Heritage League opener for both teams.

Ryan Fullarton pitched a complete game for Santa Clarita Christian. He struck out seven and gave up five hits.

Santa Clarita Christian and Pacifica Christian play again today.

The College of the Canyons baseball team is on the road for a game against Mission College today.

The Valencia boys tennis team beat Newbury Park, 15-3 to stay undefeated and improve to 10-0. The three Valencia doubles teams swept their matches. Anders Jansson and Joey Fernicola won, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Valencia returns to Foothill League play later on today against Canyon. The Hart boys tennis team is on the road against West Ranch and the Saugus boys are at Golden Valley.

There is also a full slate of boys volleyball matches today in the Foothill League. Valencia travels to Canyon. Hart is at West Ranch and Saugus is at Golden Valley.

The first Foothill League golf match of the season is on tap today at Robinson Ranch. The Santa Clarita Christian boys golf team is also at Robinson Ranch for a match against LA Baptist.

The Dodgers blew a one-run lead in the ninth inning and lost to the Los Angeles Angels, 5-4, in the first game of the Freeway Series.

Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton coughed up two runs in the ninth inning. Mike Trout drove in the tying run for the Angels with an RBI single. Hank Conger followed by knocking in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.

The Dodgers and Angels wrap up the Freeway Series tonight at Angels Stadium.

The Kings begin life without all-star Anze Kopitar and are in Edmonton tonight for a game against the Oilers.

The Kings are coming off a 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche, but Kopitar broke his ankle in the game and will be out at least six weeks.
