A Room With A View

Tami_Smight_Headshot

I love to create beauty in my home and the homes of my clients.  Guiding my client through the design process is my strength, as well as educating my clients about the principles and elements of design.  When you understand the thought process behind a design element, I believe it helps you to see your environment differently.  You can then take that knowledge to other parts of the home.

console_tableImagine, you are sitting at your dining room table, enjoying a nice breakfast.  Inside your home, you see beauty all around you.  How nice! But as you look out the dining room window, you see a plain, bare stone wall.  That's not very inviting!

Yes, most our SCV homes have slump stone walls that surround our property.  This wall can be either an eyesore or a design feature, depending on how you work with it!

As a designer, of course I look at the wall as a canvas on which to add beauty. You can too, with very little money spent!

This console table outside my window, is a living example of how I converted a blah wall into a beautiful design element. I started with a console table that is meant for outdoor use.  It has a copper top and cast aluminum body.  On top of that, I placed some succulents in lovely containers as well as some seashells and angels.  Now to add some dimension and gradation to the design, I placed an Italian urn and iron pumpkin at the base of the console.

Choose items that inspire you.  If your home has an Italian flair, place Italian pottery; if you love all things French (like me!), choose a French glazed pot to place some lovely flowers.

On the wall itself, plant some creeping fig to provide color and dimension to the wall  As you can see in the photo, I actually painted my wall, to balance the gray color of the stone. As the season's change, I switch out the items on console to honor holidays etc.

With this little vignette, you too can transform a cold, barren wall into a colorful inviting design element.
