Valencia Boys Tennis Team Wins Spring Smash
The Valencia boys tennis team finished on top in its own Spring Smash tournament over the weekend. The boys won the team portion of the event with 22 points. West Ranch was second with 16, followed by Camarillo in third with 12.
Valencia’s No. 1 singles player JR Macalutas defeated Camarillo’s Justin Anderson in the singles final, 8-5. The Valencia team of John Schmidt and Russell Del Rosario defeated teammates Anders Jansson and Joey Fernicola in the doubles final, 8-6.
Valencia has a Foothill League match against Hart today. The West Ranch boys tennis team is on the road against Golden Valley and Saugus is at Canyon.

For the second week in a row, the Valencia softball team is ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Divison I poll. West Ranch cracked the top 10, at No. 10 in the latest rankings.
The Valencia baseball team moved up to No. 2 in the Southern Section Division I poll. Edison is the top-ranked team. Hart is No. 7.
It’s a packed day of boys volleyball in the Santa Clarita Valley. The Valencia boys team, ranked third in the CIF Southern Section Division II poll, plays at home against Orange Lutheran.
The Golden Valley boys are home for a match against San Marino. Saugus is on the road against Cathedral and Hart travels to Alemany.
The Saugus High ice hockey team beat Hart, 8-2, at the Valencia Ice Station. Joey Cicoria had a goal and an assist for Saugus.
The Canyon High ice hockey team lost to Antelope Valley, 4-3 in overtime. Josh Escoe had a goal and an assist for Canyon.
In college baseball, the College of the Canyons is home for a game against West LA College today.
The College of the Canyons softball team hosts LA Valley College today.
The Trinity Classical Academy baseball team is on the road for a game against Hillcrest Christian.
The Santa Clarita Christian softball team travels to Flintridge Prep.
It’s looking like Dodgers third baseman Casey Blake will start the season on the disabled list with a bad back. If Blake heads to the DL, newly acquired Juan Uribe will most likely start the season at third base and Jamey Carroll would start the season at second.
The Dodgers lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-0, in spring training in Arizona. Clayton Kershaw was solid, but far from impressive. He gave up two runs on eight hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked two.
The Lakers will play their second game without suspended Andrew Bynum. He is missing the last game of his two-game suspension after a hard foul on Michael Beasley of the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.
Without Bynum, the Lakers beat the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. The Lakers face the Phoenix Suns tonight at Staples Center.
Bryan Herta Autosport has a new driver for the Firestone Indy Lights Series. The team owned by Valencia’s Bryan Herta announced that Duarte Ferreira from Luanda, Angola, will drive the team’s No. 28 entry in the Indy Lights Series.
The first race of the Indy Lights Series is this weekend as part of the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in Florida.
The Kings beat the Calgary Flames, 2-1, in a shootout. Anze Kopitar scored the game-winner in the shootout. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime.
Jarrett Stoll gave the Kings a 1-0 lead with a goal in the third period. The Flames tied the game less than a minute later with a goal by Olli Jokinen.
Next up for the Kings are the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night at Staples Center.
