Trinity Softball Teams Pounds Out 19 Runs Against Santa Clarita Christian

khts_sportsThe Trinity Classical Academy softball team beat Santa Clarita Christian, 19-10, in a game at the Hart PONY Complex.

Trinity scored six runs in the first inning and rolled the rest of the way. Trinity starter Emily Kim struck out 15, but gave up seven earned runs to Santa Clarita Christian.

Kaeli Massetto was 5-for-5 with a  triple, three doubles and four RBIs for Trinity. Kerry Houchin drove in four runs and was 2-for-2 for Santa Clarita Christian.

The two teams meet again in a couple weeks on March 29.

The Foothill League baseball season begins today. Valencia, the reigning league champs, is home against Canyon. Golden Valley is on the road against Hart. Saugus is home for a game against West Ranch.

The College of the Canyons softball team split a doubleheader against Citrus College and lost its first Western State Conferene game of the season.

COC won the first game, 3-2, but lost the second game, 9-1. Karla Lira homered in the first game for COC. Starter Karissa Hartwig pitched a complete game with three strikeouts. She also drove in the winning run with a single in the sixth inning.

Alicia Paiz made her first start of the season for COC in the second game. She ran into trouble in the third inning, giving up four runs on five hits. Kiana Duran drove in COC’s only run in the second game with a single in the fifth inning.

The Canyon, Golden Valley and West Ranch softball teams are in the Quartz Hill Varsity Tournament in Lancaster today.

The Saugus softball team begins play in the High Desert Tournament today.

The Valencia softball team plays El Modena in the championship game of the Stu Penter Classic.

The Santa Clarita Christian softball team plays LA Lutheran.

The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team nearly blew a 23-point lead, but won its opening round game, 78-76, over Michigan State in the NCAA tournament.

UCLA missed 17 free throws and made only two field goals in the final eight minutes of the game. Michigan State, meanwhile, went on a 35-14 run to end the game.

Tyler Honeycutt and Malcolm Lee each scored 16 points to lead UCLA. Draymond Green recorded the seventh triple double in NCAA tournament history for Michigan State. He had 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. It was the first triple double since 2009 by Cole Aldrich of Kansas.

There were two stunners in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Morehead State, the 13th seed in the Southewest Region, beat fourth-seeded Louisville, 62-61.

Twelfth-seeded Richmond beat fifth-seeded Vanderbilt, 69-66, in the same bracket. Morehead State and Richmond meet on Saturday for a spot in the Sweet 16.

The Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-4, and hit three home runs. Matt Kemp, Gabe Kapler and Hector Gimenez homered for the Dodgers. Starter Chad Billingsley pitched five strong innings, giving up three runs on five hits.

The Lakers are back in action tonight against the lowly Minnesota Timeberwolves at Staples Center. The Lakers have won two games in a row and 10 of their past 11 since the All-Star break.

The Timberwolves have lost two games in a row and five of their past seven.

The Kings lost to the St. Louis Blues, 4-0. Jaroslav Halak had to make only 17 saves for the Blues to record his 14th career shutout.

Next up for the Kings are the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.
