Valencia Softball Team Sweeps Doubleheader In Home Opener

khts_sportsThe Valencia softball team, the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division I, swept a doubleheader against Camarillo. Valencia won the first game, 7-0, and the second game, 8-4, in its home openers.

The Valencia girls hit five home runs. Kristina Brackpool hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the fifth inning of the first game. Pitcher Carly Mortensen struck out a career-high 16 in the complete game shutout in game 1.

Sarah Solano hit a three-run home run and Justine Sibthorp hit a solo home run for Valencia in the second game.

The Hart softball team got a little revenge against Highland. A week after losing to Highland in the championship game of the Hart Tournament, the Indians won the rematch, 5-4.

Tracy Chandless hit a two-run home run and starter Emili Escamilla struck out five for Hart.

The Saugus softball team beat Alemany, 5-1, behind a home run from Jenna Kelly. Alyssa Rodriguez drove in a run and Abby Linn was 2-for-4 with two doubles for Saugus.

The Canyon softball team lost to San Marino, 1-0. San Marino starter Michelle Floyd tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out 16.

The Master’s College baseball team lost to Concordia, 11-5. It was the sixth loss in a row and the eighth loss in the past nine games for The Master’s College.

Bryan Lucas hit a two-run homer and Jared Otto was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run for The Master’s College.

The Hart volleyball team, playing without its starter setter, swept Crescenta Valley in three games.

Sammy Badaloff racked up 22 assists and started in place of injured Chris Leclair, who hurt his ankle in practice earlier in the week.

The Valencia boys golf team finished second in the Burbank Invitational at DeBell Golf Course. Carson Lega shot a 2-over par 74 to lead Valencia.

South Torrance won the Burbank Invitational with a team scored of 301.

The West Ranch boys golf team beat Acradia in a match play event.

The West Ranch boys tennis team beat Hoover, 14-6. All three West Ranch doubles teams swept their sets.

The USC Trojans men’s basketball team lost to Virginia Commonwealth, 59-46, in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Three Trojans starters fouled out of the game. Jio Fontan scored a team-high 14 points before fouling out.

Jamie Skeen scored a game-high 16 points for Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams will play sixth-seeded Georgetown in Chicago on Friday.

The UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team begins play in the NCAA tournament tonight. UCLA is the seventh-seed in the Southeast Region and will play 10th-seeded Michigan State.

The Kings are home tonight at Staples Center for a game against the St. Louis Blues. The Kings just completed a 4-0 road trip including a convincing 4-2 win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night.

The Blues have lost two games in a row including 2-1 against the Anaheim Ducks last night.
