COC Hockey Team Plays For National Championship Tonight

College of the Canyons knocked off California University of Pennsylvania on Saturday to advance to the final of the American Collegiate Hockey Association Men’s Division-III National Championship Tournament.

They will play for the championship tonight at 8:30 p.m. in Holland, Michigan, where the tournament is being held.

The victory was the fourth in as many days for the Cougars, who took an undefeated regular season record and No. 1 regional ranking into the tournament.

On Friday, they defeated defending back-to-back National Champions Saginaw Valley State University 4-1, especially meaningful after being eliminated by the Cardinals in the quarterfinal round of last year’s National Championships.

The 2010-11 season marks the third consecutive venture to the ACHA National Championships for COC head coach John Taferner and the Cougars. The trip presents an opportunity for College of the Canyons to continue to forge its national reputation as a hockey powerhouse.

For the past several seasons the College of the Canyons hockey team has proven time and again that it can be highly competitive both in the state and on a national stage. As a club sport, the Cougars primarily face off against teams from surrounding four-year colleges and universities.

Nevertheless, over the last three seasons Canyons has won 53 regular season games, 13 playoff games, and back-to-back-to-back PCHA Adams Cups — advancing to the National Championships in 2009 and finishing fifth at that tournament in 2010.
