Canyon Meets No. 1 Rialto In Second Round Of CIF State Basketball Playoffs

khts_sportsThe Canyon girls basketball team won its first CIF State playoff game in school history. Now the Canyon girls get a chance to knock off the No. 1 seed.

Canyon plays Rialto, the top seed in the CIF Division II Southern California Regional, tonight in the second round of the playoffs.

Canyon is on the road again. Rialto is 30-3 and won the CIF Southern Section Divison 2AA championship.

Canyon is coming off its first CIF State playoff win, 74-61, over Monache on Tuesday.

The Golden Valley baseball team beat Eastside, 13-6. Billy Fredrick drove in three runs and Adrian Carballo was 3-for-3 with an RBI single in a four-run fifth inning for Golden Valley.

The Canyon baseball team beat Birmingham, 3-1, in the Southern California Royal Invitational. Adam Evans drove in two runs and Grant Westerson had an RBI for Canyon.

The Santa Clarita Chrisitian baseball team lost to Frazier Mountain, 12-6.

The Hart softball team split a doubleheader with Moorpark. Hart lost the first game, 1-0, but won the second, 5-1. Emili Escamilla threw a one-hitter in the first game, but took the loss. She won the second game in relief, pitching the final three innings. She struck out four and held Moorpark scoreless on two hits.

The Valencia boys tennis team beat Westlake, 11-7, and improved to 4-0. Valencia’s No. 1 singles player, J.R. Macalutas swept his sets.

The Hart boys tennis team beat Royal, 15-3. Rohan Shankur swept his singles sets. The doubles team of Cody Berlioz and Tommy LaBat remained undefeated and dropped only three games.

The Hart boys tennis team is back in action today with a match against Lancaster. The Canyon boys tennis team is on the road against Notre Dame.

The Master’s College baseball team lost to Fresno Pacific, 8-1. Joe Riddle drove in the only run for The Master’s College. JT Adams was 2-for-4 with two doubles and scored a run.

The Master’s College and Fresno Pacific play again today.

The Hart boys volleyball team is home for a game against Highland. The Saugus boys volleyball team hosts Quartz Hill. West Ranch is home against Village Christian.

The Valencia and Saugus softball teams begin play in the Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz., today.

The Golden Valley boys golf team plays Burbank at DeBell Golf Course.

The College of the Canyons baseball team is on the road for a game against Bakersfield College.

The College of the Canyons softball team is home for a doubleheader against Bakersfield College.

The Pac-10 men’s basketball tournament began last night at Staples Center. Oregon State beat Stanford, 69-67 in first-round action. Oregon beat Arizona State, 76-69, in the other first-round game.

USC plays Cal today at 3. UCLA, the second-seeded team in the tournament, plays Oregon.

The Lakers are in Miami for a showdown with the struggling Heat. The Lakers have won eight games in a row and have not lost a game since the All-Star break.

The Heat have lost five games in a row and six of their last seven.

The Dodgers lost to the Seattle Mariners, 9-4, in spring training in Arizona. Rod Barrajas was 2-for-2 and hit a solo home run for the Dodgers.

Dodger starter Jon Garland left the game in the second inning with pain in his side. He took himself out of the game and will be examined by doctors today.

He is the second Dodger starter with injury problems in the spring training. Vicente Padilla had surgery to repair nerve damage in his pitching arm.

The Kings beat the Detroit Red Wings, 2-1, behind a strong game from goaltender Jonathan Quick. He made 28 saves and the Kings scored twice in the second period to hand the Red Wings their fourth loss in a row.

Dustin Brown and Anze Kopitar scored for the Kings in the second period.

The next stop for the Kings is Columbus for a game against the Blue Jackets on Friday night.
