Canyon Girls Basketball Team Wins First CIF State Playoff Game

The Canyon girls basketball team beat Monache, 74-61, in the first round of the CIF State Division II playoffs. It was the first CIF State playoff win in school history for Canyon

The long layoff and long bus ride did not affect the Canyon girls. Canyon lost to Buena in the semifinals of the Southern Section playoffs and hasn’t played in more than a week. They had to travel to central California for their first-round game against Monchahe in Porterville.

Four Canyon players scored in double figures. Adriana Dent led the way with 16 points. Sara Ward scored 12, Amber Evans had 11 and Alia McCoy had 10.

Canyon faces Rialto, the top-seeded team in the Division II playoffs, on Thursday.

The Hart baseball team rallied to beat Thousand Oaks, 5-3, in the quarterfinals of the Easton Southern California Showdown.

Luke Persico went 3-for-3 with a home run and drove in three runs.

Hart was down 2-1 after three innings. Persico hit a solo home run in the first inning. He doubled in a run in the fourth to give Hart a 3-2 lead.

Hart plays Chatsworth in the semifinals on Thursday.

The Saugus baseball team beat Lancaster, 12-5, and won their first game of the season. Austin Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two doubles and drove in four runs. Justin Sheehan had two doubles and drove in two runs.

The College of the Canyons baseball team beat LA Mission College, 7-5, to win its first Western State Conference game of the season.

COC scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally for the win. Robbie Mousselli drove in two runs and Kasey Toven singled in a run in the eighth inning.

The Saugus boys golf team beat Quartz Hill by 72 strokes in a match at Valencia Country Club. Andrew Moore shot a 5-over 77 to pace Saugus.

The Saugus softball team swept a doubleheader against Newbury Park. The Centurions won the first game, 3-1, and the second game, 19-0.

Cassie Herrera won the first game. She gave up one run on four hits in the complete game win. Abby Linn and Jenna Kelly each homered for Saugus. Linn hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Kelly followed with a two-run shot later in the inning.

Kimmie Lockhart won the second game, tossing a one-hit shutout. Brea Bregara hit a grand slam and Randi Jossett hit a three-run home run in the second game.

The Valencia softball team beat Chino Hills, 8-1, and Rancho Verde, 11-0, to advance to the championship game of the Stu Penter Classic.

Valencia starter Carly Mortensen won both games. She also had three hits in the two games. Jessica Smith hit a three-run home run for Valencia.

The West Ranch softball team beat Granada Hills, 6-2. Kylie Sorenson hit a two-run home run for West Ranch.

The Hart boys volleyball team beat Lancaster in three games. J.J. Mosolf had 10 kills to lead Hart.

The Golden Valley boys volleyball team beat Rio Mesa in four games. Alex Schlossman had 24 kills for Golden Valley.

The Lakers cruised to a 101-87 win over the Atlanta Hawks as Kobe Bryant moved passed Moses Malone into sixth place on the all-time NBA scoring list.

Bryant scored 26 points and Andrew Bynum had 16 points and 16 rebounds. The Lakers won their eighth straight game and have not lost since the All-Star break.

Next up for the Lakers are LeBron James and the Miami Heat on Thursday.

The Dodgers hit four home runs and beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-1, in spring training in Arizona. Matt Kemp hit his first homer in the Cactus League. His two-run shot capped a four-run fourth inning.

Andre Ethier, Tony Gwynn and Aaron Miles each hit solo home runs for the Dodgers.

The Kings are in Detroit for a game against the Red Wings tonight. The last time the two teams met, Detroit beat the Kings handily, 7-4, at Staples Center on Feb. 28.

The Kings are coming off an overtime loss to the Dallas Stars. The Red Wings have lost three games in a row since beating the Kings.
