The Master's College Retires Mike Penberthy's Basketball Jersey Number
Mike Penberthy went from being the leading scorer in The Master’s College basketball history to an NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Last night, he became the first player from The Master’s College to have his number retired.
Penberthy, who wore No. 33 when he played for The Master’s College, was on the Lakers team that won the NBA championship in 2001. He spent two seasons with the Lakers and averaged 4.9 points per game.
His college career was a little more impressive. He is the school record holder in four categories, including points and 3-pointers, and averaged 19.7 points per game.
In his junior and senior seasons at The Master’s College, Penberthy was on the NAIA All American first teams.
The Master’s College men’s basketball team beat Azusa Pacific, 78-77. Leif Karlberg led four players from The Master’s College in double figures. He had 23 points and made five 3-pointers.
The Master’s College women lost, 73-59, to Azusa Pacific, the third-ranked team in the NAIA. Ella Joines scored 14 points and made four 3-pointers for The Master’s College in the loss.
The College of the Canyon women’s basketball team earned the seventh seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Regional tournament and will play Mt. San Jacinto College on Friday night.
The COC women finished with a 22-7 record and champions of the Western State Conference South Division. Mt. San Jacinto is the 10th seed in the Southern California Regional and has a 20-8 record.
The College of the Canyon baseball team beat Golden West College, 3-1. Jeremy Weber went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs. COC starter Steven Messner tossed seven shutout innings and struck out six.
The College of the Canyon men’s golf team won the Western State Conference match at Alisal Ranch Golf Course in Solvang by 13 strokes.
The Valencia boys basketball team couldn’t dig out of a deep first-quarter deficit and lost to Etiwanda, 70-58, in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA playoffs.
Lonnie Jackson scored 21 points for Valencia. The Vikings were held scoreless for the first three-and-a-half minutes of the game and trailed 10-0.
USC-bound guard Byron Wesley led Etiwanda, the fourth-seeded team in the playoffs, with 27 points.
The Trinity Classical Academy boys basketball team lost to Redlands Adventist Academy, 57-43, in the quarterfinals of the Division 6A playoffs.
Jordan Mumper scored a team-high 14 points for Santa Clarita Christian in the loss.
On the girls side, Canyon is on the road and will face Huntington Beach in the quarterfinals of the Division 2AA playoffs tonight.
The surprising Santa Clarita Christian girls are home against Valley Christian in the quarterfinals of the Division 6A playoffs.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team lost to Rim of the World, 3-1, in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 7 playoffs at LA Baptist High School.
Colette Blake gave Santa Clarita Christian a short-lived 1-0 lead in the first half. Rim of the World scored three unanswered goals, one at the end of the first half and two more in the second half, to win the game.
The Hart boys soccer team is in the second round of the Division 3 playoffs and will be home against University today.
The College of the Canyons softball team lost to Santa Barbara City College, 6-0. COC collected only two hits, back-to-back singles in the first inning.
The Lakers snapped their three-game losing streak with a 104-80 win over the Atlanta Hawks at Staples Center last night.
Kobe Bryant scored 20 points and Pau Gasol had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers.
The Lakers are back on the road and will travel to Portland for a game against the Trail Blazers tonight.
The Kings are in Anaheim for a game against the Ducks tonight. The Kings are coming off 3-0 loss to the New York Islanders on Saturday. The Ducks have lost three games in a row, most recently to the St. Louis Blues, 9-3, on Saturday night.
