khts_citymatters_scvlogoThe City of Santa Clarita recently received the Award of Achievement from the California Park and Recreation Society for the great American Campout event and the new Discovery Park. The City will receive recognition at the 2011 California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Training Conference.

The Great American Campout, awarded in the health and Wellness category, saw hundreds of campers descend on Central Park last year for the inaugural campout. The event returns on June 25, offering residents the opportunity to spend a beautiful summer evening under the stars and experience the outdoors with fun activities for the whole family. Space is limited and registration begins February 22, register online at santa-clarita.com/campout.

In the Park Planning and Design Category, Discovery Park was specifically recognized for the park’s unique features of integrating community needs while restoring ecological function to the land.

“We are honored that the California Park and Recreation Society has chosen to recognize this City’s dedication to innovation and providing unique recreational experiences to our community,” commented Mayor Marsha McLean.

The California Park and Recreation Society is a membership organization with approximately 4,000 members representing the 525 local parks and recreation agencies throughout the state and focuses on creating community through people, parks, and programs.
