Valencia, Canyon Boys Basketball Teams Advance To Second Round Of CIF Playoffs
The Valencia boys basketball team erased a four-point halftime deficit and beat Oxnard, 66-55, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA playoffs.
Zach Davis scored a career-high 20 points and had 10 rebounds to carry his team to the comeback win. Lonnie Jackson had an off-night shooting, but still finished with 22 points for Valencia, the No. 12 seed in the Division 1AA playoffs.
Valencia plays Murrieta Valley in the second round of the Division 1AA playoffs on Friday.
The Canyon boys basketball team beat Buena, 77-60, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.
Clay Kasdorf scored 27 points for Canyon. Teammate Isaac Covarrubias scored 14.
Canyon will play Canyon of Anaheim in the second round on Friday night.
The West Ranch boys basketball team made an early exit in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs.
The Wildcats lost to top-seeded Ventura, 69-48, after taking a first-quarter lead.
David Harris scored nine points on three 3-pointers in the first quarter as West Ranch built a one-point lead, 17-16. But Ventura outscored West Ranch, 20-4, in the second quarter. Harris finished with a team-high 16 points and made four 3-pointers.
Ventura’s Dylan Houck scored a game-high 26 points and made four 3-pointers as well.
Ako Kaluna and Justin Ballenger each scored eight points for West Ranch.
The Hart boys basketball team lost to Arroyo Grande, 64-49, in the first round of the Division 3AA playoffs.
Roman Delgado scored a team-high 18 points for Hart. Austin Maly scored 13 points in the loss.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team beat Nuview Bridge, 61-35, in the first round of the Division 6AA playoffs. Bret Ranhofer scored 21 points to lead Santa Clarita Christian. Tikki Moore had 20 points and seven rebounds.
Santa Clarita Christian plays Wildwood in the second round of the playoffs.
The Canyon boys soccer team lost to Nipomo, 3-2 in double overtime, in the wild-card round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs.
Nipomo took a 2-0 first-half lead, but Canyon battled back. Mohammad Roknipour scored in the 35th minute to cut the lead in half. He tied the game on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.
The two teams played into the second overtime before Nipomo scored the game-winner with two minutes left to play.
The high school girls basketball and soccer teams are center stage today in CIF playoffs.
The Canyon girls basketball team begins the Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs at home against Valley View tonight.
The Saugus girls are home in the first round of the Division 2AA playoffs against Marina.
The Valencia girls are home against Diamond Bar. The West Ranch girls are on the road and play Whittier.
The Hart girls are on the road in the first round of the Division 3AA playoffs and will play Rio Mesa.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball team travels to Lake Arrowhead Christian for the first round of the Division 6A playoffs.
The Saugus girls soccer team is home for the first round of the Division 1 playoffs against Newport Harbor.
The Hart girls are on the road for their first round soccer playoff game and will play Harvard-Westlake. The Valencia girls are at Mission Viejo.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team plays Frazier Mountain in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs at the Glendale Sports Complex.
West Ranch kicker Brady Stuart will be playing college football at UC Davis in the fall. Stuart was second on the West Ranch football team in scoring with 50 points. He made 38 extra points and four field goals in his senior season.
The Lakers bumbled their way to the All-Star break with an embarrassing 104-99 loss to the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers. It was the third loss in a row for the Lakers. It was only the 10th win of the season for the Cavaliers.
Pau Gasol had a monster night against the Cavs. He scored 30 points and had 20 rebounds. But he was the only Laker starter who didn’t start his All-Star break early.
Kobe Bryant scored 17 points and was 8-for-24 from the field. He also had 12 rebounds. Shannon Brown had a nice game off the bench, scoring 15 points.
The Lakers head home for the All-Star game this weekend at Staples Center. Bryant is a starter and Gasol in a West All-Star reserve. The NBA All-Star game is Sunday.
Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw will be the opening day starter on March 31 against the San Francisco Giants. While the start of the Dodgers rotation is set, the bullpen is in a bit of disarray.
Reliever Ronald Belisario did not report to spring training with the rest of the pitchers. According to reports, he has not received a visa to travel from his native Venezuela to join the team in Arizona for spring training. There is a possibility that Belisario might not join the team at all this season.
The Kings beat the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-3, in a shootout and won their third game in a row.
Jarrett Stoll scored the game-winner in the shootout.
The Kings are back at it again tonight. They are in New York for a game against the Rangers.
