West Ranch Boys Basketball Team Upsets Canyon
Just when it looked like the Canyon boys basketball team was poised to capture the Foothill League championship, West Ranch played the role of spoiler.
The West Ranch boys beat Canyon, 61-57, and handed the Cowboys their third league loss of the season.
Ako Kaluna paced West Ranch with 26 points and seven rebounds. His biggest play of the game came when he blocked a shot by Clay Kasdorf with 17 seconds left in the game to preserve a two-point lead.
Meanwhile, the Valencia boys basketball team took care of business against Saugus, 95-73, and moved into first place in the Foothill League standings.
Valencia’s Lonnie Jackson broke his own school record with 39 points and hit 10 3-pointers, setting another school record.
The Hart boys basketball team beat Golden Valley, 63-40. Hart’s John Green scored 21 points and had 14 rebounds.
Wade Rodriguez led Golden Valley with nine points.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team beat Milken, 60-55. Bret Ranhoffer scored 26 points and made five 3-pointers for Santa Clarita Christian, the second-place team in the Heritage League standings.
The Valencia girls basketball team beat Saugus, 45-39. Lauren Spargo scored 15 points, 10 in the second half. Teammate Kalia Summerlin scored 12 points and Faith Anumba added 10.
Crystal Makous led Saugus with 12 points and Megan Dawe had six points and 11 rebounds.
The Canyon girls basketball team beat West Ranch, 61-53, and won the Foothill League championship. Adriana Dent scored a game-high 20 points and Alia McCoy had 10 points for Canyon.
Alexus Bryant scored 15 points for West Ranch in the loss. Whitney Branham had 11
The Saugus girls soccer team shut out Valencia, 1-0, and ran its undefeated Foothill League record to 9-0.
Stacy Atwater scored the lone goal of the game on a header off a corner kick from Nicole Penick in the 33rd minute.
The Hart girls soccer team shut out Golden Valley, 5-0. Katie Trevino scored two goals and Mallory Utley had two assists for Hart.
The Golden Valley boys soccer team upset Hart, 1-0, and handed the first-place Indians their second Foothill League loss of the season. Andy Ruiz scored early in the first half to give Golden Valley the lead. Goalkeeper Fernando Lauchu made nine saves to record the shutout.
The Canyon and West Ranch boys soccer teams played to a 1-1 draw. Bonifacios Rojas gave Canyon a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first half. Lucas Reilly tied the game for West Ranch with a goal in the second half.
The Master’s College baseball team beat Claremont, 6-2. Chris Talley was 2-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs. Joe Riddle also went 2-for-4 and drove in a run.
The Master’s College starter Charlie Gillies went five innings, struck out six and gave up three hits.
The College of the Canyons softball team beat East LA College, 4-3. Karissa Hartwig scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning, went 3-for-4 with two doubles and pitched a complete game.
The Master’s College men’s basketball team lost to Biola, 56-47. Leif Karlberg scored a team-high 16 points for The Master’s College. Dwight Gordon had 22 for Biola, the 18th-ranked team in the NAIA.
The Master’s College women’s basketball team lost to Biola, 77-63. Erica Inge scored 16 points and was 4-for-4 from 3-point territory. Zoe Scott also scored 16 points for The Master’s College.
Jennifer French scored 24 points to lead Biola, the ninth-ranked team in the NAIA.
