COC Baseball Team Wins Season Opener
The College of the Canyons baseball team won its season opener, 2-0, over El Camino College.
COC starter Troy Neiman went six innings, gave up only three hits and struck out eight.
Cal Vogelsang and Jeremy Weber each had RBI singles in the first inning.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys soccer team beat Hillcrest Christian, 5-0, behind two goals from Christian Broadbent.
Daniel Stratton scored a goal and had two assists. Matthew Subrahmanyan and Trent Garrison each scored a goal and Chad Latch notched two assists.
Ryan Otto made five saves and recorded his first shutout of the season.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball team got a huge game from Taylor Cubas in a 53-42 win over Vasquez.
Cubas scored 32 points, more than 60 percent of her team’s total points, in the win. She scored 13 of her team’s 15 points in the fourth quarter and had seven steals in the game.
Cubas was 15-of-19 from the free-throw line and instrumental in the third quarter when Santa Clarita Christian outscored Vasquez, 20-6. Jenna Davis scored five points and had 10 rebounds.
The Santa Clarita Christian girls soccer team beat Hillcrest Christian, 4-0, and clinched at least a share of the Heritage League championship.
Joanna Masopust scored two goals and freshman Suzanah Gwinn scored in the second half for Santa Clarita Christian.
Goalkeeper Natalie Keoshian recorded her ninth shutout of the season.

The Golden Valley girls travel to West Ranch and Hart is at Saugus.
In high school soccer, the Hart boys are at Saugus, Golden Valley is at West Ranch and Valencia is at Canyon.
On the girls side, Saugus is at Hart, West Ranch is at Golden Valley and Canyon is at Valencia.
The Lakers lost to the visiting San Antonio Spurs, 89-88, after rallying in the fourth quarter to take a one-point lead in the final seconds.
But Antonio McDyess tipped in a missed shot by Tim Duncan and gave the Spurs the win.
Pau Gasol scored 19 points for the Lakers in the loss. Kobe Bryant was one rebound shy of a triple-double. He scored 16 points, had 10 assists and nine rebounds.
It was the third loss in the past four games for the Lakers, who start a seven-game road trip on Saturday.
Before the game, it was announced that Gasol will join Bryant on the NBA Western Conference All Star team later on this month.
The NBA All-Star reserves were announced yesterday for the Western and Eastern Conference teams.
Clippers rookie Blake Griffin earned a spot on the Western Conference team and became the first rookie all star since Yao Ming of the Houston Rockets in 2003.
The NBA All Star Game is Feb. 20 at Staples Center.
The Dodgers added a left-handed reliever to their bullpen. Ron Mahay signed a non-roster deal with the Dodgers and will be invited to spring training. If he makes the team, he will reportedly receive a $900,000 contract.
Mahay spent the 2010 season with the Minnesota Twins. It was his ninth team in 15 major league seasons. He appeared in 41 games and held left-handed hitters to a .219 batting average.
