Trevor Smyth decided to continue his football career with the US Naval Academy.
The Valencia boys basketball team was shorthanded, but pulled out a 66-45 win over Golden Valley. Three Valencia players, including Lonnie Jackson, the team’s leading scorer, had to sit out after they were ejected from Friday night’s game against West Ranch.
Max Sommer scored 14 points and Quincy Quintero added 11 for Valencia.
The Canyon boys basketball team beat Saugus, 67-45, behind 25 points from Clay Kasdorf.
Brad Buchignani scored a team-high 15 points for Saugus.
The Hart boys basketball team beat West Ranch, 65-64 in overtime, and avoided a three-game losing streak.
Roman Delgado’s 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in overtime was the difference for Hart. He had 19 points.
The Trinity Classical Academy beat West Valley Christian, 67-64, in overtime. Jordan Mumper scored 24 points and Spencer Klehm nailed a 3-pointer in overtime to lift Trinity to its eighth win in Omega League play.
The West Ranch girls basketball team beat Hart, 65-63, in overtime. Michelle Arima scored 18 points and Alexus Bryant added 13 for West Ranch.
The Saugus girls basketball team handed Canyon its first Foothill League loss of the season, 45-44. Jordan Oster scored a team-high 14 points for Saugus. Natalie Valenzuela scored the game-winning basket with 25 seconds left in the game.
The Valencia girls beat Golden Valley, 67-41, behind 16 points from Faith Anumba.
Golden Valley’s Theresa Ohaya led all scorers with 20 points.
The Lakers beat the Houston Rockets, 114-106 in overtime, and ended their two-game losing streak.
Kobe Bryant scored 32 points and had 11 assists for the Lakers.
The Canyon boys soccer team shut out Saugus, 1-0. AJ Rochow gave Canyon the 1-0 lead with a second half goal in the 65th minute. Niko Nudya made five saves for the shutout.
The Valencia boys got two goals from Michael Fischbach in their 3-0 win over Golden Valley. Michael Tapanese scored the third goal for Valencia.
The Santa Clarita Christian boys beat Delphi Academy, 5-3, behind a three-goal game from Daniel Stratton. He recorded the hat trick plus added an assist.
The Saugus girls soccer team shut out Canyon, 1-0. Ysabel Padron scored the lone goal of the game in the third minute.
The College of the Canyons men’s golf team won the Bakersfield Invitational by 19 strokes over Ventura College. COC shot 738 as a team in the two-day tournament. Alex Macaluso paced COC with an even par 144 over the two days.
In college basketball, The Master’s College women beat Fresno Pacific, 64-56, and won their third game in a row.
Theresa Brown had 21 points and 15 rebounds for The Master’s College. Erica Inge scored 16 points and had eight assists.
The Master’s College men lost to Fresno Pacific, 59-43. It was the eighth loss in the past nine games for The Master’s College. Kevin Dyer led the Mustangs with 14 points.
The Valencia Flyers ice hockey team split a pair of games against the Long Beach Bombers over the weekend.
The Flyers won the first game, 6-4, but lost the second game, 4-3.
The Flyers are on the road this weekend in Bakersfield. They have a two-game series against the Junior Condors on Friday and Saturday night.
The King lost to the Minnesota Wild, 1-0, in a shootout and saw their little three-game winning streak snapped.
Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped all 25 shots by the Wild in regulation and overtime. Pierre-Marc Brouchard scored the only goal of the game in the shootout.
The Kings continue their 10-game road trip tonight in Edmonton for a game against the Oilers.
