Valencia Boys Basketball Wins Foothill League Opener In OT

khts_sportsThe Valencia boys basketball team, playing without injured Lonnie Jackson, held off West Ranch and won its Foothill League opener, 59-57, in overtime.

Jackson, the Boston College-bound senior, sat out the game with a foot injury. He is expected to miss at least two weeks.

Valencia jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the first half, but West Ranch rallied and tied the game on a 3-pointer by Justin Ballenger to send the game into overtime. Max Sommer scored a game-high 27 points for Valencia.

In other boys basketball games, Canyon beat Hart, 54-47. Coley Apsay sparked a second-half comeback for Canyon and scored 18 points. Hart’s Roman Delgado scored a game-high 19 points.

The Saugus boys beat Golden Valley, 81-47, behind 22 points from David Reynoso. Wade Rodriguez scored 16 points for Golden Valley.

On the girls side, West Ranch opened Foothill League play with a 64-52 win over Valencia. West Ranch’s Alexus Bryant scored 13 points. Lauren Spargo led Valencia with 13 points.

Canyon beat Hart, 49-31, behind a strong defensive effort. Alia McCoy led Canyon with 10 points. Hart scored only five points in the first quarter and 11 in the first half.

Hart’s Mariah Glasshoff scored a team-high 11 points.

The Saugus girls beat Golden Valley, 75-26. Megan Dawe scored 26 points and had six rebounds.

In high school soccer, the Saugus girls beat Golden Valley, 4-0. Lauren Cech broke a scoreless first half with a goal in the 55th minute. Nicole Penick scored a goal and had two assists for Saugus.

The Canyon and Hart girls played to a 1-1 draw. Hailey Jenkins scored her first goal of the season to give Hart a 1-0 lead in the first half. Canyon tied the game on a second-half goal

The Saugus boys soccer team also shut out Golden Valley, 2-0. Joey Rodriguez scored the first goal of the game in the second half to give Saugus a 1-0 lead. He assisted on the second goal, scored by Cameron Sikich.

The Valencia boys beat West Ranch, 2-1. Renato Sanchez scored both goals for Valencia on penalty kicks.

The Lakers blew out the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers, 112-57. The Cavaliers point total was a record low by a Lakers opponent. Ron Artest and Andrew Bynum each scored 15 points for the Lakers.

The Kings will be sending one player to the NHL All-Star Game in North Carolina. That player is Anze Kopitar. The winger has a team-high 45 points.

Two Ducks made the All-Star team. Winger Corey Perry and goaltender Jonas Hiller were selected as all stars. Perry leads the Ducks with 45 points. Hiller has a 2.39 goals against average.

The NHL All-Star game is scheduled for Jan. 30.
