Santa Clarita Christian Football Team Turning It Up To 11
The Santa Clarita Christian football team is taking it to the next level.
Santa Clarita Christian has applied for and received permission to play 11-man football in the 2011 season. The football team has also applied for admission into the San Joaquin League.
Santa Clarita Christian won the CIF Division I 8-man football championships in 2008 and 2009. The team made it to the semifinals of the 8-man playoffs in 2010.
The San Joaquin League consists of five teams and plays in the Southern Section Northeast Division. Bishop Union won the Northeast Division championship.
The Saugus girls soccer team won the Buena Tournament, blanking Oaks Christian, 2-0, in the championship game.
Ysabel Padron and Lauren Cech each scored a goal in the first 15 minutes of the game and goalkeeper Madison Hebert earned the shutout.
The Valencia boys soccer team won two games in the San Gabriel Valley Classic tournament at Monrovia High School and advanced to the championship round.
Valencia shut out San Gabriel, 1-0, behind a goal from Aubrey Gierard in the first game.
Ben Belin and Renato Sanchez each scored a goal in Valencia’s 2-1 win over St. Genevieve. Gierard assisted on both goals.
The Valencia girls basketball team beat Calabasas, 48-38, in the semifinals of the Burroughs Tournament and will play for the championship tonight.
Lauren Spargo scored 21 points and Faith Anumba had 18 for Valencia.
The Valencia girls will play St. Bernard in the championship game at 6:30.
The Saugus boys basketball team lost to Alemany, 95-69, in the quarterfinals of the San Fernando Valley Invitational.
Alemany moves on to the semifinals and will play Santiago Corona tonight. In the other semifinal, it will be Crespi against Sierra Canyon.
In college basketball, The Master’s College men beat Willam Jessup, 71-69. Joey Fuca hit the game-winner at the buzzer. He scored 13 points in the game.
The College of the Canyons men’s basketball team went 1-2 in the West Valley Holiday Classic Tournament in Saratoga over the weekend.
COC lost to Foothill College, 68-61, on the first day of the tournament. COC came back and won its second game of the tournament, 76-69, against host West Valley on the second day.
But in the consolation final, COC lost to Diablo Valley, 70-57.
