Ballet Company Continues Tradition With The Nutcracker

Now in its 16th year, the Santa Clarita Ballet Company production of The Nutcracker has grown up with the city.

Over time, the ballet has evolved into a holiday mainstay in Santa Clarita like the tree lighting at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.

In 2000, the growing production moved to the restored auditorium at Hart High School, but it didn’t stop there.

From December 18-19, it will take place at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center, where it’s been the last five years.

The production’s maturity has produced special byproduct: successful students from the SCBC are returning home to perform.

“The best thing about this year is all the returning students we have who have gone professional,” said Cathy Suen, a spokeswoman for the SCBC.

Season Winquest, who entered the SCBC Academy when she was three years old and went on to perform in the Boston and Joffrey ballet companies, is The Nutcracker’s prima ballerina, playing the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

There will be two shows on December 18 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and two shows on December 19 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
