Chris Varner Resigns As Coach Of Canyon Football Team

khts_sportsChris Varner, the Canyon High football coach, resigned over the weekend, according to a story in The Signal.

Varner guided Canyon to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs and to a 10-2 record. His team won its first playoff game since winning a CIF state championship in 2006.

Varner cited wanting to spend more time with his family as the reason for resigning. He leaves a team with two of the more talented players in the Foothill League. Quarterback Joanthan Jerozal is coming off his junior season. He threw for 3,048 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Sophomore receiver Drew Wolitarsky caught 77 passes for 1,472 yards and 13 touchdowns.

While the Canyon football team lost its football coach, the Canyon boys basketball team won its own Canyon Classic tournament.

Canyon edged Valencia, 59-58, behind 22 points from Coley Apsay, the tournament most valuable player.

Apsay hit five 3-pointers, including the eventual game-winner with 38 seconds left in the game.

Down 59-54, Valencia scored four points in the final 30 seconds of the game, but missed two potential, game-winning 3-pointers.

Valencia’s Lonnie Jackson scored 19 points, but only had six in the second half.

The West Ranch boys basketball team won the third-place game in the Canyon Classic, downing Highland, 53-50.

Tyler Zelaya and Ako Kaluna each scored nine points to lead West Ranch.

The West Ranch girls basketball team lost for the first time this season, 61-57, in the championship game of the Gold Coast Classic tournament at Rio Mesa High School.

Alexus Bryant scored 15 points in the championship game for West Ranch. Teammate Hannah Green and Bryant were selected to the all-tournament team.

The Saugus girls basketball team lost to Chaminade, 61-51, in the third-place game of the Gold Coast Classic.

Megan Dawe scored 17 points and was selected to the all-tournament team.

In high school soccer, the Saugus boys won two games in the San Pedro High School Pirates Cup at Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks.

Saugus beat Fulton College Prep, 4-3, behind goals from Joey Rodriguez and Eric Madrigal.

Rodriguez scored a hat trick for Saugus in a 5-4 win over Annenberg in the second game.

In the NHL, the Kings traded for Marco Sturm of the Boston Bruins over the weekend. The Kings only had to give up future considerations to the Bruins. The Bruins were looking to clear salary cap space and the Kings had room under the salary cap for Sturm.

However, Sturm is coming off major knee surgery and still needs to pass a physical to complete the trade.

The Kings, meanwhile, are in St. Louis for a game against the Blues tonight. The Kings are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild at Staples Center on Saturday night.

The Blues beat the New Jersey Devils, 4-1, on Saturday night.

Listen to the game tonight at 4:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
