Valencia's Steven Manfro Earns Foothill League Football Player Of The Year

khts_sportsValencia running back Steven Manfro set two school records this season and earned Foothill League Player of the Year honors.

Manfro set the Valencia school marks for rushing yards and touchdowns in a season. He guided Valencia to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs for the second year in a row.

Valencia swept the three Foothill League players of the year awards as well.

Quarterback Alex Bishop is the offensive player of the year. Ryan Gorman is the defensive player of the year. Zach Wermich is the lineman of the year.

In high school volleyball, Valencia’s Emily Elias earned a spot on the All-CIF Division 1-A first team. Elias led Valencia to the quarterfinals of the Division 1-A playoffs.

In high school basketball, the Valencia boys beat Grant, 76-57, in the Canyon Classic tournament. Max Somer scored 23 points and teammate Lonnie Jackson added 16 for Valencia.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys basketball team beat the Trinity Classical Academy, 59-34. Tiko Moore scored 19 points for Santa Clarita Christian.

The Golden Valley girls basketball team lost to Gardena, 78-44, in the Cool Hoops Winter Tournament at Golden Valley. Teresa Ohaya scored 11 points for Golden Valley.

The Saugus girls soccer team won its first game of the season, 3-1, over Lancaster. Stacey Atwater, Jillian Allen and Sarah Sager each scored goals for Saugus.

The Hart girls soccer team beat Quartz Hill, 2-1. Katie Trevino and Danielle Delatorre each scored a goal for Hart.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls shut out Oakwood, 6-0, behind four goals from Joanna Masopust. Colette Blake and Christina Keoshian also scored for Santa Clarita Christian.

The Saugus boys soccer team got two goals from Zack Nua in a 4-0 win over Lancaster.

The West Ranch boys soccer team beat Notre Dame, 3-1, behind a goal and an assist from Lucas Reilly.

The Canyon boys soccer team shut out Crespi, 3-0. Mohammed Roknipour scored two goals for Canyon.

In college basketball, The Master’s College women beat Fresno Pacific University, 73-70. Erica Inge scored 25 points and The Master’s College improved to 6-1.

The Master’s College men lost to Fresno Pacific, 70-69, and dropped to 3-5 on the season.

Anthony Cammon had 17 points and seven assists for The Master’s College. Teammate Leif Karlberg also scored 17 points.

The Dodgers added an outfielder and welcomed back a pitcher, according to various reports. Tony Gwynn Jr., the son of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, and the Dodgers agreed to a one-year contract. Gwynn played for the San Diego Padres last year and hit .204 with three home runs in 117 games.

The Dodgers and pitcher Vicente Padilla agreed to a one-year deal. Padilla was part of the Dodgers rotation last year when he was healthy. He might have a hard time cracking the rotation next season with the addition of Jon Garland and the return of Ted Lilly. There has been talk of Padilla becoming the closer, especially if Jonathan Broxton struggles again.

The Lakers made it interesting, but held off an inspired Washington Wizards basketball team, 115-108. The Lakers had a 19-point lead in the third quarter, but couldn’t put away the Wizards in the second half.

Kobe Bryant scored 32 points and Pau Gasol had 21 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists for the Lakers.
