Mt. SAC Wins Men's Soccer State Championship Over COC
Not only did the College of the Canyons men’s soccer team lose the championship game of the California Community College State Championship, some of the players lost their composure.
Three COC players were issued red cards in the second half as Mt. San Antonio College won, 4-0, to capture its second state championship in a row.
Freshman Luis Fuentes scored a hat trick for Mt. SAC and earned most valuable player honors for the game played at College of the Canyons on Sunday.
Fuentes scored his team’s first three goals. He gave Mt. SAC a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. He added two more goals in the second half.
With Mt. SAC up 3-0, some of the COC men’s soccer players turned to an aggressive strategy. Jesus Salazar received the first red card in the 72nd minute. Four minutes later, Victor Rodriguez received a red card. Both players were ejected from the game and COC had to play the remaining 14 minutes down two players.
Javier Castro scored the fourth and final goal for Mt. SAC in the 77th minute.
COC received its third red card of the game after Castro’s goal. Jose Reyes was ejected and COC finished the game down three players.
COC made its first appearance in the California Community College Men’s Soccer State Championship game. The COC men’s soccer team was 17-6-2 and put together an 11-game winning streak at the end of the season and during playoffs.
