Cabrillo Music Theatre Lands Awards
Cabrillo Music Theatre has once again made a big showing, with five nominations for the 2009-2010 L.A. Stage Alliance Ovation Awards. The Ovation Awards, which recognize the very best of live theatre, are considered the most prestigious theatre awards in Southern California. The 2009-2010 nominations come as Cabrillo Music Theatre prepares to host this year’s Ovation Awards in its resident 1,800 seat Kavli Theatre, located at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Bank of America Performing Arts Center.
Perhaps the most coveted of all nominations is “Best Season,” the award that recognizes consistency of quality throughout an entire season. “Cabrillo is eye-popping happy to have been nominated for five 2010 Ovation Awards including the grand dame of them all, Best Season!” exclaims Carole W. Nussbaum, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cabrillo Music Theatre. Cabrillo’s season included Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, The Andrews Brothers, and Cinderella.

Cabrillo will compete with four other companies for this honor, from among the hundreds of theatre organizations that were deemed eligible.
Sally Struthers, making her Cabrillo debut in Cinderella, has been nominated with a Best Featured Actress nomination for the role of “The Fairy Godmother.” Struthers’ show-stopping performance was a hit with audiences of every age. The Andrews Brothers received nominations for Best Director of a Musical (Nick DeGruccio), Best Choreography (Roger Castellano), and Best Musical Direction (Lloyd Cooper). DeGruccio and Castellano are no strangers to recognition for Cabrillo productions; Castellano was nominated in 2008 for Jekyll and Hyde, while DeGruccio won the Best Director award for that same musical.
Says Nussbaum, “It’s a thrill beyond words to receive news of this recognition by the L.A. Stage Alliance. Hosting the Awards Ceremony in Thousand Oaks in and of itself is a thrill and a privilege. Having our season and artists recognized with nominations, on our home stage, electrifies the event for us!” Continues Nussbaum, “The ‘Best Season’ nomination is a rewarding acknowledgement of the entire organization. The delightfully comic performance of the multi-talented Sally Struthers, and the creative vision of Nick DeGruccio, Roger Castellano, and Lloyd Cooper, are deserving of this distinctive recognition.”
