Saugus, Hart Girls Open With Wins In the Valencia High-Five Basketball Tournament

khts_sportsThree girls basketball teams are playing in the Valencia High-Five Classic tournament this week, but only two of them opened with victories.

The Saugus girls basketball team started the season with a win over Knight, 45-34, in the opening round of the Valencia High-Five Classic.

Megan Dawe led Saugus with 29 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the field.

The Hart girls basketball team beat Silverado, 54-51, in the High-Five Classic. Madyson Stately scored 17 points and Mariah Glasshoff had 15 points for Hart.

The Hart girls opened the season with a loss, 60-50, against Royal. Christina Falcone scored 12 points for Hart.

The host Valencia girls basketball team lost to Stockdale from Bakersfield, 50-30, in the High-Five Classic. Kalia Summerlin and Jennifer Anumba each scored six points for Valencia.

The Canyon girls basketball team won its season opener, 72-55, over Buena in the Ventura Tournament. Tiffini Stone scored 14 points for Canyon. Jaya Schultz and Sara Ward each scored 10.

The West Ranch girls basketball team won its season opener, 60-48, against Granada Hills in the first round of the Crescenta Valley Tournament. Alexis Bryant scored 15 points and had seven rebounds.

The Santa Clarita Christian girls basketball team lost to Grace Brethren, 41-39, in its season opener. Taylor Cubas and Katie Eberlein each scored 13 points for Santa Clarita Christian.

The Canyon boys basketball team has won its first three games of the season, all in the Burbank Tournament.

Canyon is coming off a 65-50 victory over Mark Keppel in the tournament. Four Canyon players scored in double figures. Clay Kasdorf led the way with 21 points.

Earlier in the tournament, Canyon beat Glendale, 66-43, and Santa Clara, 69-49.

Darnell Haggerty scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds against Glendale.

Kasdorf scored 28 points against Santa Clara.

The Valencia boys basketball team won its opening round game of the Simi Valley tournament, 88-55, over Besant Hills.

Lonnie Jackson scored 27 points and Troy Hammel added 13 for Valencia.

The Canyon boys soccer team won its season opener, 4-1, over Quartz Hill. Jordan Markovich, Sipriano Vigil, Anthony Donato and A.J. Rochow each scored a goal for Canyon.

The West Ranch boys soccer team played to a scoreless draw against L.A. Baptist in its season opener.

The Santa Clarita Christian boys soccer team beat LA Lutheran, 6-3, in its season opener. Daniel Stratton scored three goals and had two assists for Santa Clarita Christian.

The West Ranch junior varsity boys soccer team shut out Lancaster, 7-0. Brandon Dooley, Matt Duben, Cody Klop, Joey Maxey, Tyler Simone, Eric Stevens and Ashton Kolander each scored a goal for West Ranch.

Four swimmers from the Canyons Aquatics Club are headed to the USA Junior National Championships in Atlanta next week.

West Ranch’s Riley Mita, Valencia’s Bob Hwang, Hart’s Alex Ngan and Caitlin Baker from Saugus are the swimmers slated to compete for Canyons Aquatics in the Junior National meet.

The four-day meet starts on Dec. 8.

The Lakers have a four-game losing streak after a 109-99 setback to the Houston Rockets. It is the first time the Lakers have lost four games in a row since April of 2007.

Kevin Martin scored 27 points for the Rockets. Shane Battier added 17.

Kobe Bryant had 27 points for the Lakers. Lamar Odom scored 25 points and had 11 rebounds.

The next game for the Lakers is against the Sacramento Kings at Staples Center on Friday.
