Valencia Moves Into CIF Football Semis; Canyon Eliminated

khts_sportsThe Valencia football team defeated its playoff nemesis in the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

Valencia decisively beat Moorpark, 40-21, on a monster night from running back Steven Manfro.

Manfro gained 346 yards and scored a touchdown for Valencia, which finally beat Moorpark in the playoffs for the first time in three years. Moorpark eliminated Valencia from the playoffs the past two years.

Valencia quarterback Alex Bishop threw for 272 yards and four touchdowns.

With his 346-yard performance against Moorpark, Manfro has rushed for 2,434 yards and 40 touchdowns in 12 games.

Valencia will play Oaks Christian, the top seed in the Northern Division playoffs, in the semifinals on Friday.

The Canyon football team saw its season come to an end, 45-21, against St. Bonaventure, the No. 2 seed in the Northern Division playoffs.

Canyon receiver TJ Yonkers caught three touchdown passes from quarterback Jonathan Jerozal. But St. Bonaventure built a 24-7 halftime lead and wore down the Canyon defense in the second half.

Canyon running back Darius Rudolph gained 110 yards on 22 carries.

Jerozal threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team was eliminated from the CIF Division I 8-man playoffs with a 66-56 loss to Excelsior in the semifinals.

Daniel Green scored three rushing touchdowns for Santa Clarita Christian, the reigning Division I 8-man champs. He gained 155 yards on 21 carries and was 6-of-12 passing for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

The Saugus girls cross country team won its fifth CIF state cross country championship in a row with a record-setting performance at Woodward Park in Fresno.

The Saugus girls broke their own course record in 89 minutes, 21 seconds to win the CIF Division II race.

Kaylin Mahoney finished second in the race, the highest-finishing runner from Saugus, and was followed by five of her teammates in the top 10.

Stephanie Bulder was third, followed by Karis Frankian in fifth, Danielle Hernando in eighth and Jenay Jauregui in 10th.

The Saugus boys team finished second in the CIF Division II race to Loyola. Robert Pion was the highest finisher for Saugus in seventh place. Logan Smith completed the course in 15th place for Saugus. AJ Yarnall was 29th.

The Golden Valley boys team was seventh in the CIF Division III race. Golden Valley’s Kristian Martinez was 19th in the race. He was followed by Juan David Garcia in 20th and Nolan Del Valle in 31st.

The Kings are in Anaheim for a game against the struggling Ducks tonight. Not that the Kings have been playing inspiring hockey lately either.

The Kings have lost six of their last seven games, including 2-1, to the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday night. The Kings will be looking to avoid their first four-game losing streak of the season.

The Ducks are coming off a 6-4 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Ducks.
