Meeting To Focus On Library Expansion Completion And Citizens Committee
On Tuesday, the Santa Clarita City Council will once again turn its attention to the three local libraries.
At its meeting on October 12, the Council members approved the creation of the Citizens Public Library Advisory Committee. According to City staff, the purpose of the committee is to provide public input while determining the long-range strategic plan for developing the Santa Clarita Public Library system.

Of the 70 who filed an application by the November 12 deadline, the City Council Library Ad-Hoc Committee has recommended 37 for service.
Some applicants included public opponents of the takeover, including Lynne Plambeck, Alan Ferdman, Carole Lutness and Ed Shain, who is suing the City over the matter, but they did not receive a nomination.
In other library matters, the City and County have appeared to find a resolution for how to fund the completion of the Canyon Country Jo Anne Darcy Library’s expansion project.
The County of Los Angeles Public Library has leased the City-owned facility since 2001, undertaking a 4,500 square foot expansion project in September 2009.
However, after the City voted to withdraw from the County Library in August, the County halted construction, with an estimated cost of $522,600 for completion.
After several discussions, both parties have reached a deal, being that the County finish the project using a total of $622,600 of City funds.
Also on the agenda, the City is expected to move forward with developers to turn two small parcels of land off Newhall Avenue into housing units. One of the parcels is an underutilized Caltrans park and ride lot.
The members will also look at the recommendations provided by the Ad Hoc Recycling Facility Site Selection Committee. Established in 2008, the committee’s goal was to find an adequate site for the City’s commercial trash and recycling services.
Tuesday’s meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall.
