Valencia, Canyon Win First-Round Games In CIF Football Playoffs
Four teams from the Foothill League entered the CIF Southern Section Northern Division football playoffs. Only two survived the first round.
Valencia and Canyon advanced to the quarterfinals of the Northern Division playoffs. West Ranch and Saugus ended their playoff runs on the road.
Valencia made quick work of Highland, 42-17, scoring five touchdowns in the first half, all passes from quarterback Alex Bishop.
Max Rodriguez and Steven Manfro each caught two touchdown passes in the first half as Valencia built a 35-3 halftime lead.
Manfro scored his third touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run early in the fourth quarter and Valencia sent in its second-stringers for the remainder of the game.
Valencia plays Moorpark in the quarterfinals on Friday night.
Canyon made it interesting in the opening round against Palmdale. Canyon won the game, 24-13, but had to hold off a comeback attempt by Palmdale in the fourth quarter.
Canyon had a 24-0 lead after three quarters before Palmdale scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Canyon running back Darius Rudolph gained 132 yards and scored two touchdowns.
Canyon plays St. Bonaventure, the No. 2 seed in the Northern Division playoffs, in the quarterfinals on Friday night.
West Ranch’s first trip to the CIF football playoffs ended abruptly, 48-10, to Palos Verdes.
Palos Verdes running back Marc Sasso was a little too much for West Ranch to handle, gaining 260 yards on the ground and scoring three touchdowns.
Palos Verdes scored five touchdowns in the first half and had a 35-3 lead at halftime.
West Ranch Connor Eichten threw for 206 yards and a touchdown. Josh Guzman scored the only touchdown for West Ranch, a 52-yard reception in the fourth quarter.
The Saugus football team had its hands full with Oaks Christian, the top seed in the Northern Division playoffs. Oaks Christian won, 34-8, despite a 191-yard rushing night from Saugus running back Tyler Watt.
Oaks Christian scored four first-half touchdowns to build a 31-3 lead. Ismael Adams scored two touchdowns, one on a 55-yard interception return and the other on a 3-yard touchdown run.
The Santa Clarita Christian football team won its CIF Southern Section Division I 8-man quarterfinal playoff game, 50-0, over Laguna Blanca.
Santa Clarita Christian running back Daniel Green scored four touchdowns, gained 146 yards on the ground and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass.
In college football, the College of the Canyons lost to Fullerton College, 64-49, in the Golden Empire Bowl in Bakersfield.
COC quarterback Justin Arias threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns and scored two rushing touchdowns. But he also threw three interceptions.
COC defensive back Dashawn Cassell earned Golden Empire Bowl defensive player of the game honors.
The Lakers rode the hot hands of Pau Gasol in a 117-89 win over the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center.
Gasol had a perfect shooting night, scoring 28 points and making all 10 of his shots from the field. He was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.

In the NHL, the Kings will look to make it two wins in a row tonight against the Ottawa Senators. The Kings are coming off a 4-3 shootout win over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. The win snapped a three-game Kings losing streak.
The Senators have lost three games in a row, including 5-2, to the St. Louis Blues on Friday.
