Community Garden Taking Shape While Plot Applications Roll In

khts_citymatters_scvlogoAs the City of Santa Clarita grows, what could serve as more poignant symbol than a garden maintained by its community?

As part of Mayor Weste’s successful Healthy Santa Clarita program, the City is now accepting plot applications for the Community Garden in Central Park.

At the September 14 City Council meeting, with members ready to approve money needed for the garden’s water meter and connection fees, several residents spoke in favor of the garden, anticipating its benefits for community interaction and food supply for those in need.

Diane Benjamin, a member of the Community Garden Committee, is now fielding applications for the garden’s plots.

“We think there will be a huge response,” she said. “Hopefully we can eventually add one in Canyon Country and Newhall.”

The plot sizes are 10 feet x 10 feet and 10 feet x 20 feet, and cost $50 and $100, respectively.   Four feet x 10 feet plots built for handicapped accessibility are also available, which cost $50.

Per the plot rental agreement, gardeners must begin cultivation within two weeks and maintain their plot for the entire year. They will also agree to participate in the three joint work days to maintain the garden.

Benjamin said the garden, which is three-fourths of an acre, will hold between 40 to 80 plots, depending on the sizes requested. The plots will be awarded by lottery.

The ground breaking for the Community Garden will take place on December 3.
