Undefeated Canyon Football Team Faces Valencia Tonight

khts_sportsThe Foothill League championship could be decided in football tonight. A resurgent Canyon team hosts Valencia, the reigning Foothill League champions, tonight at Canyon High School.

Canyon is undefeated at 6-0 and is coming off a 21-14 win against Saugus in the Foothill League opener last week.

Valencia is 5-1 and thumped West Ranch, 55-28, in its league opener.

Valencia running back Steven Manfro broke the school and league rushing record with 418 yards on the ground against West Ranch.

The winner of tonight’s game should have the inside track to the Foothill League championship.

Listen to the game tonight at 7:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.

But Hart, the other team that won its Foothill League opener, might have something to say about who will win the league title.

Hart has a four-game winning streak and plays Saugus at College of the Canyons tonight.

Hart beat Golden Valley, 36-23, in its league opener. This is a different Hart team though. Once known for its high-scoring offenses, Hart is winning games with defense this year. Hart recorded three sacks, all by defensive end Justyn Eddins, and three interceptions against Golden Valley.

Saugus lost to Canyon on a last-second scoring drive and touchdown by quarterback Jonathan Jerozal.

In the other Foothill League game, West Ranch plays Golden Valley at Valencia High School.

The undefeated Santa Clarita Christian football team is on the road against Faith Baptist in Canoga Park for the Heritage League opener for both teams on Saturday.

Santa Clarita Christian has outscored its opponents, 350-59, and mercy-ruled all six of the teams it has played.

Faith Baptist is also undefeated at 6-0 and coming off a 40-20 win over Thacher.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team takes on Los Angeles Lutheran on Saturday. Trinity is coming off a 50-12 loss to Clovis Christian.

Los Angeles Lutheran has lost three games in a row, including 24-22 to First Lutheran last week.

In college football, the UCLA Bruins were no match for the Oregon Ducks, the No. 1 team in the AP poll. UCLA lost to Oregon, 60-13. Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas threw for 308 yards and three touchdowns.

The Philadelphia Phillies avoided elimination by beating the San Francisco Giants in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series.

The Phillies beat the Giants, 4-2. Jayson Werth hit a solo home run for the Phillies in the ninth inning and Raul Ibanez was 2-for-4 and scored a run.

The Phillies scored three runs in the third inning. Phillies starter Roy Halladay went six innings and struck out five.

Game 6 is Saturday in Philadelphia.

In hockey, the Kings lost to the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-2, and had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Wayne Simmonds scored both goals for the Kings.

The Kings will be in Denver for a game against the Avalanche on Saturday night. Listen to the game starting at 5:30 on AM 1220, KHTS.
