Valencia Running Back Manfro Breaks Foothill League Rushing Record

khts_sportsValencia running back Steven Manfro has been posting some gaudy numbers in football games this season. He had one of the best games in Foothill League football history on Friday night.

He rushed for a league record 418 yards in his team’s 55-28 win over West Ranch. He broke the mark of 387 yards set by Saugus running back Ryan Zirbel in 2007. Manfro broke the Valencia school record of 354 rushing yards set by Shane Vereen in 2006.

Manfro also scored five touchdowns bringing his season total to 26 in six games.

West Ranch quarterback Connor Eichten threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns on 17-of-29 passing. He also threw an interception.

Receiver Josh Guzman had a big night for West Ranch. He caught eight passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns.

The Canyon football team remained undefeated with a come-from-behind, 21-14, win over Saugus. Canyon’s Jonathan Jerozal scored the game winning touchdown on a quarterback sneak with nine seconds to play in the game.

Canyon receiver Drew Wolitarsky caught nine passes for 135 yards and two touchdowns. Jerozal ended the night with 203 passing yards and the two touchdown throws to Wolitarsky.

Saugus running back Tyler Watt, who missed the first five games of the season with a knee injury, gained 109 yards and scored a touchdown.

Saugus starting quarterback Jared Carbajal injured his knee on the second play of the game and had to be helped off the field. He did not return to the game.

The Hart football team needed a big play on defense to beat Golden Valley, 36-23.

Hart’s Joey Cicoria intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. The touchdown extended Hart’s lead from six points to 13 with just under seven minutes to play in the game.

Golden Valley quarterback Reid Soliman threw for 119 yards and a touchdown. But Hart intercepted three of his passes. He was also sacked three times and the Hart defense scored a safety.

Hart running back Dylan Edwards rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

Golden Valley running back Jeff Coprich gained 134 yards on 12 carries.

The Santa Clarita Christian football team set a school record in its 82-34 win over West Shores. The 82 points were the most in school history and Santa Clarita Christian did it in one half of the football game.

It was the sixth game in a row Santa Clarita Christian has mercy-ruled an opponent.

Daniel Green scored three touchdowns and gained 164 yards on nine carries. Ryan Espinosa scored two touchdowns, one rushing and one receiving. Four other Santa Clarita Christian players scored touchdowns on offense. Trevor Lopez scored on a fumble recovery for the only defensive touchdown of the game for Santa Clarita Christian.

The Trinity Classical Academy football team lost to Clovis Christian, 50-12, in the Omega League opener for both teams.

Trinity freshman quarterback Spencer Klehn scored two rushing touchdowns. He threw for 78 yards and rushed for 25 yards on seven carries.

The College of the Canyons football team beat El Camino College, 26-9, as the COC defense came up with three interceptions and forced three fumbles.

COC running back Ryan Zirbel, the same Zirbel who held the Foothill League rushing record, gained 69 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Justin Arias threw for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

In high school cross country, the Canyon boys finished fourth in the large schools varsity race at the Canyon Cowboys Invitational meet at Castaic Lake. The meet attracted 68 teams from across the state. Sam Willis was the highest-finishing runner for Canyon in ninth place at 16 minutes flat on the 3-mile course.

Centennial won the boys large schools portion of the meet.

The Canyon girls were 11th in the large schools varsity portion of the meet, won by Serrano

The Golden Valley boys finished were fourth in the small schools varsity portion of the meet, won by Chapparal.

The Golden Valley girls were seventh in the small schools varsity race. Rosemead won the girls small schools varsity race.

In the National League Championship Series, the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Francisco Giants, 6-1, to even the series at a game apiece.

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins drove in four runs and Phillies starter Roy Oswalt went eight innings with nine strikeouts.

Game 3 of the American League Championship Series is tonight between the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. The series is tied at one game apiece. Cliff Lee gets the start for the Rangers against Andy Pettitte for the Yankees.
