Sleeping Suspect Finds Himself Behind Bars

khts_crimeA man apparently sleeping in his car turned into a major investigation Tuesday, resulting in the recovery of stolen property and the arrest of a wanted suspect.

Lt. Mark Hershey said that at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to a call of a man asleep in his car on Sierra Highway at Via Princessa in Canyon Country. Deputies reported that the man may have been under the influence of narcotics, based on his slow responses.

The deputies also discovered that the car in which he was sleeping was stolen, so they arrested him.

As they pulled the suspect, James Waldrop, a 27-year old transient, out of the car, they noticed a large amount of what appeared to be stolen merchandise inside the car.

Fourteen hours later, detectives had located at least 10 different victims, based on stolen credit cards and a checkbook found in the car, along with other items that had been stolen in a rash of vehicle burglaries.

Waldrop was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley station on suspicion of burglary, receiving stolen property, possession of a stolen vehicle and being under the influence of narcotics.

Detectives also found that Waldrop had an outstanding warrant for $26,000 and was named as a ‘person of interest’ in another incident. He is being held at the station, awaiting his court appearance.
