Canyon Football Team Stays Undefeated With 36-3 Win Over Dos Pueblos
The Canyon football team improved to 5-0 with an impressive 36-3 win over Dos Pueblos on Friday night.
Canyon quarterback Jonathan Jerozal threw for 261 yards and four touchdowns. Three of those touchdown passes went to receiver T.J. Yonkers.
The star of the game, however, was kicker Mohammad Roknipour. He kicked three field goals including a Canyon school record 57-yarder in the second quarter.
The Valencia football lost for the first time this season, 39-24, to Loyola. The high-scoring Valencia offense had trouble moving the ball against an improving Loyola team.
Valencia running back Steven Manfro gained 110 yards and scored two touchdowns on 14 carries. It was his lowest touchdown output of the season.
Loyola running back Jared Baker rushed for 214 yards and four touchdowns and Loyola handed Valencia its first regular season loss in nearly two years.
The Golden Valley football team beat San Marino, 35-21, and head into Foothill League play with a winning record.
Running back Earl Johnson had a big game for the 3-2 Grizzlies. He rushed for 189 yards and scored four touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 38 yards.
Golden Valley quarterback Reid Soliman threw for 161 yards and a touchdown to Isa Bey.
The Trinity Classical Academy won its Omega League season opener, 40-24, over Westmark. Trinity rallied from a 16-0 deficit to win its second game of the season.
Running back Shane Larsen gained 66 yards and scored two touchdowns. He also converted on a pair of 2-point conversions.
Trinity quarterback Spencer Klehn had a busy night. He threw for 74 yards, rushed for 21 yards, recovered a fumble on defense, had an interception and knocked down a pass attempt.
The Santa Clarita Christian team had little trouble with previously unbeaten Laguna Blanca, 56-0. Santa Clarita Christian quarterback Mark Hovey completed 2-of-6 passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Santa Clarita Chrisitan mercy-ruled an opponent for the fourth time in a row.
Running back Daniel Green scored two touchdowns in the first half. On his second carry of the game, he scored on a 52-yard run.
In college football, Valencia High graduate and UC Berkeley running back Shane Vereen gave UCLA fans a reason to root against him. Vereen rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns in Cal’s 35-7 blowout against UCLA.
Cal held UCLA to 58 yards of offense in the first half and snapped the Bruins’ three-game winning streak.
The USC football team lost its second game in a row on a last-second field goal. Stanford’s Nate Whitaker kicked a 30-yard field goal to give the 14th-ranked Cardinal a 37-35 win over USC.
In the National League Division Series, the Philadelphia Phillies swept the Cincinnati Reds, winning Game 3, 2-0, behind a five-hit shutout from Cole Hamels.
Chase Utley hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the Phillies.
The San Francisco Giants beat the Atlanta Braves, 3-2, in Game 3 of their National League Division Series. The Giants lead the series, 2-1.
In the American League Division Series, the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers are going to a decisive Game 5. The Rays beat the Rangers, 5-2, in Game 4. Evan Longoria hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
In hockey, the Kings lost to the Calgary Flames, 3-1, and split their season opening series in Canada. The Kings beat the Vancouver Canucks, 2-1, in a shootout on opening night on Saturday.
