Torre Out As Dodgers Manager

Joe Torre has opted to resign from the Dodgers manager position and retire at the end of this season.

Torre has been with the Dodgers for the past three seasons and has managed the team  to two consecutive National League Championship Series in 2008 and 2009.

Torre joined the Dodgers in 2008 after a 12-year stint with the New York Yankees. He guided the Yankees to four World Series championships and 12 consecutive trips to the playoffs. He won 1,173 games and six American League pennants as the Yankees manager.

Torre was the American League manager of the year in his first season as the Yankees manager in 1996. The Yankees advanced to the World Series for the first time since 1981 and beat the Atlanta Braves.

In 1998, Torre won the first of three straight World Series as manager of the Yankees. His Yankees teams made it to the World Series in 2001 and 2003.

Torre became the Dodgers manager in 2008. He led the Dodgers to the National League Championship Series and lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in five games in his first season with the Dodgers.

In 2009, Torre guided the Dodgers to a 95-67 record, the best in the National League. The Dodgers swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Divisional Series, but lost to the Philadelphia Phillies again in the National League Championship Series in five games.

A handful of former Boston Red Sox, the Yankees biggest rival in the American League East, played for Torre and the Dodgers. Among them were Derek Lowe, Nomar Gacriparra and Manny Ramirez.

Don Mattingly, a long-time assistant for Torre, will take over as the Dodgers manager next season. Mattingly was the hitting instructor with the New York Yankees and the Dodgers under Torre.

Mattingly will begin his managing career with the Dodgers Arizona Farm League team.
